Great Wall of China Marathon

Since 1999, the Great Wall of China Marathon has taken place around the fortress of Huangyaguan, north of Tianjin. After an initial road section, runners reach the Great Wall for several kilometres of stairs, stone paths and watchtowers. The course then alternates between sections on the Wall and trails through the surrounding mountains, with terrain that makes every climb particularly demanding. The 5,164 steps announced by the organizers are one of the event's defining challenges. The marathon, half-marathon and an 8.5 km race offer the chance to discover different sections of the course.
