From Jean-Drapeau Park to Maisonneuve Park, Quebec's largest race turns the metropolis into one long corridor of cheering spectators. For more than forty years, the Beneva Montreal Marathon has remained one of the warmest events on the North American racing calendar.
Created in 1979, it was Canada's first international-caliber marathon and has since become Quebec's biggest running event. It has established itself as a weekend where elite athletes, club runners, beginners and entire families come together. Enthusiasm shows no sign of waning: every year, tens of thousands of participants and spectators gather for the event, and the most popular races regularly sell out well before race day. The program caters to all levels, from the marathon to the 1 km race reserved for the youngest participants, along with the half-marathon, 10 km, 5 km and mile races, as well as combination challenges for those looking for an extra challenge. For those targeting a fast time, the marathon is also one of the races that can qualify runners for major international events.
Everything begins on Saint Helen's Island, at Jean-Drapeau Park. Runners leave the island to reach the city, then pass through several iconic neighbourhoods, from Old Montreal to Plateau-Mont-Royal, before heading to Maisonneuve Park, where the finish is located. The course reflects Montreal itself: architecture, parks, waterfronts and lively neighbourhoods follow one another, while landmarks such as Habitat 67, the iconic housing complex from Expo 67, come into view along the way. The distances are measured and certified, providing peace of mind for those chasing a personal best.
But it is the atmosphere that defines the event. The Beneva Marathon is the grand celebration that brings the racing season to a close: in autumn, as the air grows cooler and the colours change, the city moves to the rhythm of the runners. The public is invited to come and cheer them on throughout the weekend, and it is this support that carries participants to the finish line. Many spectators are inspired to take part themselves the following year. Many others run for a cause, and numerous organizations rally their teams of runners, giving the celebration a generous and deeply human dimension!
