Every austral winter, the Rio de Janeiro International Half Marathon offers runners a postcard-perfect course between the ocean, mountains and iconic beaches. The race starts early in the morning on Leblon Beach, in the relative cool of dawn, before following the coast through Ipanema and Copacabana, with Sugarloaf Mountain as a backdrop. The almost entirely flat and fast course then brings runners back towards the city centre for a finish at Aterro do Flamengo Park, on Guanabara Bay.
Thousands of participants, including Brazilian and international elite athletes, take part every year, while 10 km and 5 km races complete the programme for all levels. The atmosphere, fuelled by a warm crowd and the typically Carioca energy, turns this race into a true celebration of the city. After the effort, there is nothing better than taking a break by the sea, with fresh fruit juice, the beach and sunshine to extend the weekend.
