Mizuno Neo Zen 2: Review and Verdict

From March 23 to 26, 20 carefully selected testers put the Mizuno Neo Zen 2 through its paces at the inaugural Road Test Camp, held at Lyon’s Matmut Stadium. At Mizuno, performance is never separated from the pleasure of running. While some brands draw sharp lines between their models, with one shoe for speed, another for long runs and yet another for easy miles, the Japanese brand has created an extremely versatile option here, capable of handling every kind of run. The new Neo Zen 2 is an ideal choice for runners who want just one pair in their rotation. This second-generation Neo Zen has gained stability, cushioning and propulsion, and is already shaping up as one of the best versatile daily trainers on the market.

A successful evolution for the Neo Zen line

The original Neo Zen won runners over with its lively cushioning and low weight. Version 2 keeps that DNA but adds control and stability, two key qualities for many runners. Mizuno uses a full-length midsole made from nitrogen-infused MIZUNO ENERZY NXT, a softer and more responsive foam than conventional EVA. The goal is clear: maintain strong energy return during faster sessions while improving overall stability through the gait cycle. The result is a shoe that responds immediately when you pick up the pace, without ever becoming unstable when your legs are feeling heavy.

A more versatile super trainer than ever

Another key feature of the Neo Zen 2 is the integration of SMOOTH SPEED ASSIST (SSA), Mizuno’s signature technology. Unlike the Rebellion and Hyperwarp lines, where the SSA angle is deliberately aggressive for faster running, the Neo Zen 2 uses a softer version that is accessible to everyone. The shoe is more comfortable and suits a wider range of runners and paces, from easy runs at 6 min/km to faster sessions at 4 min/km.

In practical terms, that means:
Controlled propulsion
A smoother heel-to-toe transition
A more natural foot roll whether you land on your heel or forefoot

A redesigned upper for better foothold and durability

Mizuno has also extensively reworked the upper. The breathable technical upper uses a cleaner, more secure construction, with particular attention paid to midfoot and heel lockdown. The heel counter is reinforced and paired with a more padded collar, noticeably improving stability on landing. Another sustainability highlight: 90% of the upper’s materials are recycled, a strong effort from the Japanese brand at a time when environmental responsibility is becoming increasingly important in the running industry.

What type of runner is it for?

The Neo Zen 2 is aimed at a broad audience, but it also meets some very specific needs:
Runners looking for one pair to do everything
Experienced runners seeking a fun, reliable super trainer
Beginners looking for a training shoe for interval sessions
Mizuno fans and runners familiar with the Neo Zen line

Where does the Neo Zen 2 fit in Mizuno’s rotation?

The Neo Zen 2 is a true Swiss Army knife in a running shoe rotation. But the Japanese brand also offers other models that can complement the Neo Zen 2 perfectly if you are looking to optimize performance.

Wave Rider 29: A stable shoe suited to everyday easy runs and runners who need support
Neo Zen 2: A versatile super trainer for easy runs, long runs and faster workouts
Neo Vista 2: Premium training model with a nylon plate, more flexible than carbon, ideal for faster sessions
Hyperwarp Pure, Elite or Pro: Carbon-plated racing shoes

The key takeaway

The Neo Zen 2 is the archetype of the ideal daily training shoe. Every runner needs a reliable, enjoyable trainer for everyday miles and back-to-back runs. This shoe delivers on that front. Experienced runners and beginners alike, especially those looking for a stable, reassuring platform, will find it easy to like. It is worth noting that this is neither a carbon-plated shoe nor an ultra-protective maximalist model. It is a well-balanced, versatile trainer designed for running often and running well. It should appeal to a broad majority of runners. At €150, Mizuno also offers very good value for money with a model capable of handling several hundred kilometers.

The Road Test Camp testers’ verdict

The Mizuno Neo Zen 2 clearly stands out, based on feedback from the 20 testers, as an accessible and versatile super trainer. Its main strengths are immediate comfort, a secure, enveloping fit and ease of use. One of the strongest points of agreement was the slipper-like feel, widely praised by the testers. The mesh upper was considered comfortable, breathable and consistent, providing excellent foothold without pressure points for most testers. The fit feels secure, particularly through the midfoot, with the sock-like construction adding to the wraparound sensation. The toe box was generally appreciated for its space, although some testers found it slightly narrow up front.

In terms of cushioning, the Zen 2 offers a well-balanced foam: soft without going too far, with a density that supports comfort across a broad range of paces. This consistent cushioning makes the shoe versatile, from easy runs to tempo sessions and, for some runners, longer distances. The shoe also feels relatively light and easy to roll through, with a smooth transition.

Several drawbacks also came up repeatedly. The main criticism was a lack of dynamism and propulsion, especially for a shoe positioned as a super trainer. The absence of a plate and relatively mild rocker make the shoe more demanding from a biomechanical perspective, placing more load on the foot and ankle. Some experienced runners appreciated this as a way to work on their mechanics, but it clearly limits performance at high intensity. Many testers reported a lack of snap and difficulty holding faster paces, with a response time that felt too slow.

Stability was another mixed point. While overall foothold is good, some instability appears around the heel or laterally, particularly in corners or at high speed. Grip was also considered an area for improvement, especially off-road.

Finally, testers noted a few design irritations: lacing issues, including difficulty getting the fit right and laces that are too long, pressure points from the tongue or collar, and an entry that can feel narrow. These issues are secondary but may affect the overall experience.

Overall, the Mizuno Neo Zen 2 is a highly comfortable, versatile and accessible shoe, ideal for runners seeking a daily trainer or a tool for working on their mechanics without technological assistance. It is less convincing for speed sessions or runners looking for outright dynamism and performance.

The Mizuno Neo Zen 2 is a lightweight, lively shoe that keeps you close to the ground while offering excellent foothold and good responsiveness. It is ideal for experienced runners looking to work on their mechanics over shorter distances, from 5 to 10 km, thanks to its precise fit and effective stability.

Alexis

The shoe provides good foothold thanks to its quality mesh and enveloping bootie, with a comfortable feel and smooth foot roll, including slight propulsion from the heel. However, its considerable flexibility and lack of rigidity make it less dynamic and closer to a daily trainer. The slightly high rear tongue and thin forefoot sole are the main areas for improvement.

Camille

The shoe is very comfortable, with a slipper-like fit, good cushioning and pleasant, breathable mesh, making it suitable for both everyday runs and long outings. However, it lacks dynamism at faster paces, and the lacing can be difficult to adjust properly for an optimal lockdown.

Julie

The shoe is lightweight, comfortable and well fitted, with good foothold and an overall sense of freedom. It offers adequate cushioning and breathable materials, with effective lacing and a satisfactory fit, particularly through the forefoot and around the ankle.

Maud

The shoe offers excellent comfort with enveloping, pleasant mesh that provides a secure feel and good foothold. The collar reinforcements add comfort and may help reduce rubbing and blisters.

With the Neo Zen 2, Mizuno confirms its expertise in versatile training shoes. More stable than the previous version while remaining just as light and enjoyable to run in, it strikes a fine balance between comfort, responsiveness and clean design. It stays true to the Japanese brand’s DNA, helping runners stack up the miles with confidence.
