Can a marathon be both a record-chasing rocket ship and a postcard-perfect run? In Amsterdam, the answer is yes and that’s exactly what makes it unique. It’s hard to beat the Dutch capital if you want to mix sightseeing with a PR attempt. Runners come as much to soak up the city’s gems as to race its marathon. The course is flat and lightning-fast, cutting through Amsterdam’s iconic neighborhoods and setting the stage for memories that stick for life. From the start to the finish line, everything feels top-tier: razor-sharp organization, a quick race, and a serious cultural hit. Here’s why the Amsterdam Marathon is one you should run at least once.

A start and finish inside the Olympic Stadium

A marathon start line is always a special moment. Nerves, tension... but also pure excitement, sharing the buzz with everyone around you, and the joy of finally cashing in months of training. When that moment happens on the legendary track of Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium, it’s even more magical. This place is a true temple of sport, and it has hosted the marathon since... 1975. From 300 runners back then to more than 60,000 today across all distances (32,000 in the marathon alone). And it’s not just about running and track: major chapters of sporting history were written here too, from the 1928 Olympic Games to the 1954 Tour de France, and of course Ajax Amsterdam matches... So it’s in a stadium packed with history and heavy with emotion that thousands of runners set off at the Amsterdam Marathon. It doesn’t just start in the best possible way, it also delivers a spectacular finish right here, in the heart of the Olympic Stadium. Full circle.

Amsterdam, the capital of the flat marathon

Amsterdam is a city with more than one identity. Between the Old Town, the canals, coffee shops, museums, nightlife... you never get bored here. But there’s one very specific reason the world’s best athletes keep coming back to race here: an ultra-flat course that makes this marathon one of the fastest on the planet. It’s no secret, the route is basically a billiard table. With total elevation gain somewhere between 50 m and 70 m, there are no major difficulties. No climbs, no punchy changes of rhythm, and long straight stretches that let you lock into cruising speed.

The elites know it and show up every year to chase big times. The course records are seriously strong. Kenyan Geofry Kipchumba owns the men’s best mark with 2:03:30 set in 2025. On the women’s side, Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw holds the course record in 2:16:52, established at the 2024 edition. The Amsterdam Marathon is a record factory, and while it regularly hosts national championships, it’s also built for an international field. With 140 different nationalities on the start line, the race enjoys a huge reputation worldwide. An impressive figure that shows how the Netherlands’ biggest marathon has, over the years, become a real benchmark on the global stage alongside the Majors.

For amateur runners, the conditions are the same and just as PR-friendly. Whether you’re chasing sub-3 or looking to break 5 hours, the depth of the field is outstanding. From start to finish, almost nobody truly runs alone in Amsterdam, and the lack of elevation is a luxury for everyone.

Amstel, Vondelpark and the Rijksmuseum: a race like an open-air museum

Step into a classic brown café in the Jordaan, wander the Old Town streets, rent a bike and move around like a local, take a canal boat ride, enjoy the green spaces of Vondelpark... Amsterdam isn’t considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities by accident. There’s something for everyone: architecture lovers, food and drink fans, history buffs, or dedicated shoppers. The Dutch capital is packed with culture, and its marathon is the perfect showcase of it.

Right from the gun, you’re swept into an emotional whirlwind inside the Olympic Stadium, where spectators can also enjoy the show from the stands. Quickly, runners reach the famous Vondelpark, which they’ll see again later around kilometer 40. Around the 4 km mark comes one of the race’s highlights: running through the Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands’ national art museum. Even the most locked-in runners can’t stay indifferent to how beautiful it is. With its mix of styles and wall decorations, it’s a real architectural gem. The stretch along the Amstel is another key part of the course. Marathoners spend around 10 km running beside this historic river that cuts through the city and even gave Amsterdam its name. It’s a calmer moment, out on the city’s more rural edge. After 30 km, runners loop through the eastern part of town before heading back toward the start area, with a second pass by the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark. The finish line sits inside the Olympic Stadium.

Why put Amsterdam on your bucket list?

  • The international vibe : Running the Amsterdam Marathon means jumping into a huge, feel-good running celebration. And it stretches far beyond the Netherlands. Again: 140 nationalities on the start line creates a special kind of atmosphere for a European marathon. It has that big-race feeling you get at the Majors, where you’re part of something bigger than yourself. A powerful buzz that only major international events can deliver.

  • An accessible event: Beyond the marathon, there are other distances like the 7.5 km, the half marathon, and even kids’ races on Saturday. The whole family can take part, not just the marathoner. It’s a perfect chance to set goals together or introduce your kids to running.

  • Unbeatable logistics : Amsterdam’s strength is also its location. Set in northwestern Europe, it’s a central hub in terms of access and proximity to the major European capitals. That ideal positioning makes the race especially popular with international runners. The Dutch capital can be reached in just 4 hours by train, city center to city center.

  • The city’s charm: Amsterdam is beautiful, quirky, authentic and compact. Getting around is easy, and pedestrian-friendly spaces are everywhere. But bikes are the real kings here. Amsterdam is one of the world’s cycling capitals. There are more bikes than people... Bike lanes are everywhere and more than half the population gets on a bike every day to ride around the city. Between the canals, terraces, green spaces and cycling loops, it’s the perfect destination for a weekend of exploring.

  • A race with international prestige : The Amsterdam Marathon holds World Athletics’ Platinum Label. It’s the highest level of certification awarded by the sport’s governing body. The distinction rewards the work done by the organizers, with very high standards for organization, elite athlete support, safety, timing, media coverage, and more. It’s the top tier for marathons, alongside the Majors. For elite athletes, it’s also a great place to earn more points in the World Athletics Rankings, for example as part of Olympic qualification.
