Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui win the 2024 New York City Marathon
On Sunday, November 3, 2024, more than 55,000 marathoners lined up for the most iconic marathon of them all, the TCS New York City Marathon. Two names emerged at the finish: Abdi Nageeye in the men's race and Sheila Chepkirui in the women's race. The Dutchman, third in 2022, crossed the finish line in 2:07:39, almost three seconds slower than Tamirat Tola's time last year, the course record on this World Major at 2:04:58. Abdi Nageeye finished six seconds ahead of Evans Chebet, the pre-race favorite. Another name to remember this year is Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui. Racing the course for the first time, she clocked 2:24:35 to take the top spot on the podium. Chepkirui finished ahead of defending champion Hellen Obiri, beating her by 15 seconds. Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey, the half-marathon world-record holder, took second in 2:07:29.
