Onemus Kiplagat Kiplimo and Shewarge Alene win Stockholm Marathon

Nearly 20,000 runners lined up for the Stockholm Marathon on Saturday, May 31, 2025. The race also hosted the Swedish Marathon Championships, where Wilma Modig and Samuel Russom claimed the national titles, while Onemus Kiplagat Kiplimo and Shewarge Alene won the 48th edition of the Stockholm Marathon.

Kenyan dominance in the men’s race

The favorites delivered at the 48th edition of the Stockholm Marathon. Kenyan runners treated tens of thousands of spectators to a thrilling battle that went down to the final few hundred meters. 19,441 runners lined up for the marathon in the Swedish capital, starting in front of the clock tower at Stockholm Stadium. It was a new participation record for the race, which is a qualifier for the Abbott World Marathon Majors. The men’s race was marked by Kenyan dominance, with five runners in the top 10. Another key moment came in the final few meters, when Onemus Kiplagat Kiplimo took a wrong turn that could have cost him the win. The Kenyan found his way back onto the course and secured victory in 2:11:34, ahead of compatriots Edwin Kosgei (2:11:45) and Silas Sugut (2:12:01), who finished second and third respectively. After 42.195 km through the city center on a relatively hilly course, the runners were rewarded with a finish inside the iconic Stockholm Olympic Stadium.

Shewarge Alene edges compatriot Muluhabt Tsega

The women’s race was just as gripping. Shewarge Alene and Muluhabt Tsega fought all the way to the finish, with the decisive move coming inside the Olympic Stadium. Shewarge Alene clocked a strong 2:30:38 to win by just six seconds from fellow Ethiopian Muluhabt Tsega. Alene had already produced an impressive top-five finish at the Mumbai Marathon earlier this year, while Tsega had placed second at the Paris Half Marathon. South Sudanese athlete Atalena Loliha held on comfortably for third, completing the marathon in 2:33:22. The women’s field included six Swedish athletes and four African athletes.

Wilma Modig and Samuel Russom crowned Swedish champions

Among the 20,000 runners who lined up for the Stockholm Marathon, plenty of Swedish athletes took to the streets of the capital. The race also served as the Swedish Marathon Championships. In the men’s event, the podium was decided by less than 40 seconds. Samuel Russom (2:16:39), the pre-race favorite, claimed the title after a close battle with the new Swedish runner-up Kristofer Låås (2:16:54) and Linus Rosdahl (2:17:12), who finished third. In the women’s title race, Wilma Modig won decisively in 2:36:03 to become Sweden’s new marathon champion. Samrawit Mengsteab (2:38:46) and Hanna Lindholm (2:39:22) completed the podium.
