Running a marathon is an achievement in itself, but some courses push human endurance to its absolute limits. Marathons serves up a double helping of 42.195 km races renowned for their difficulty and drawing athletes in search of extraordinary challenges. Hold on tight, it’s going to be a wild ride.

1. North Pole Marathon (Norway): a race on ice

One of a kind, the North Pole Marathon takes place on the floating sea ice of the Arctic Ocean, specifically in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, at Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen. First held in 2003, the race challenges runners with temperatures that can drop to -40°C, fierce winds and an unstable surface underfoot. For the record, it is the world’s northernmost marathon and could even claim the title of the planet’s toughest race. Mittens strongly recommended.

2. Antarctic Ice Marathon: extreme cold

Much like the North Pole Marathon, the Antarctic Ice Marathon means tackling freezing temperatures, powerful winds and snowy, slippery terrain. Participants need to be equipped for extreme conditions, making this race as much a logistical challenge as a physical one.

3. Everest Marathon (Nepal): altitude as the main adversary

The Everest Marathon is the highest marathon in the world, starting at an altitude of 5,364 metres from Everest Base Camp. Runners then descend towards Namche Bazaar at 3,440 metres, following steep, rocky trails. The extreme altitude and technical terrain make this a particularly punishing race.

4. Kilimanjaro Marathon (Tanzania): at the foot of Africa’s highest peak

Since 2003, the Kilimanjaro Marathon has taken place every year in Moshi, Tanzania. Participants cover 42.195 km at the foot of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. The course begins with a gradual climb over the first 10 kilometres, reaching an altitude of 1,200 metres, before descending back towards the city. Temperatures can rise quickly, adding another layer of difficulty for runners.

5. Marathon du Mont-Blanc (France): the Alps at their finest

Cocorico! France can claim one of the toughest marathons around, right here in Chamonix. Over time, the Marathon du Mont-Blanc has become an iconic mountain race. Runners face 2,780 metres of elevation gain over 42 km, crossing technical trails and taking in breathtaking Alpine scenery. The altitude and rugged terrain make this marathon a true test of endurance.

6. “Baikal Ice Running Marathon” (Russia): Siberia at your feets

The Baikal Ice Marathon, in Russia, offers a one-of-a-kind experience: running across the frozen surface of Lake Baikal. That alone is quite something. Runners must contend with freezing temperatures, strong winds and a slippery surface, making every step a challenge. Physical hardship and an extreme environment combine in an adventure that only the toughest competitors will finish.

BONUS

Badwater Ultra Marathon (United States): across Death Valley

We’re bending the rules slightly here, since Badwater is technically an ultramarathon, often considered one of the toughest races in the world. Covering 217 km through California’s Death Valley, it takes place in temperatures that can exceed 50°C. Runners also face more than 4,000 metres of elevation gain, testing both their endurance and mental resilience.

Marathon des Sables (Morocco): hell in the desert

Considered one of the toughest races in the world, the Marathon des Sables covers roughly 250 km through the Sahara Desert. The fearless participants face temperatures above 40°C while carrying all their own equipment and food. Rigorous physical and mental preparation is more than recommended.

Taking on any of these marathons demands meticulous preparation, outstanding fitness and unshakeable resolve. These extreme events give runners the chance to push beyond their limits and experience unforgettable adventures in extraordinary settings. Hats off to the bravest of them all.
