Known worldwide as a fashion capital, a design powerhouse and a symbol of Italy’s economic drive, Milan is about far more than catwalks and skyscrapers. After hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics, the city is further cementing its status as a major sporting hub capable of staging international events. Every spring, the Milan Marathon turns the city’s modern avenues and historic neighbourhoods into a huge playground for runners from around the world. Fast, well organised and constantly growing, it has established itself as one of Italy’s leading marathons. But before you can take on Milan’s asphalt and experience this unique blend of performance and dolce vita, you first need to secure your race entry. So how do you enter the Milan Marathon, and what are the different ways to get to the start line? Here’s everything you need to know.

How do you enter the Milan Marathon? We explain everything in this article.

General entry: no ballot required

The Milan Marathon is one of those races where you can still enter without going through a ballot. With just a few weeks to go before race day, some places may still be available, giving runners the chance to register relatively late. However, demand for the Milan Marathon is rising steadily, so it would be no surprise to see entries sell out earlier and earlier. General entries are available directly through the race’s official website.

There is also a minimum age of 20 to take part in the full marathon. Once the entry quota has been reached, the organiser closes registration. Entries open several months before race day, but signing up as early as possible is strongly recommended if you want to secure your place among the 40,000 runners taking part across all race formats that weekend.

What your entry includes:

  • Race bib

  • Third-party liability insurance

  • Medical support and assistance

  • Runner bag with partner products

  • Official T-shirt

  • Aid stations on the course and after the race

  • Timing service

  • Finisher medal

  • Bag drop

  • Changing facilities

  • Transport service in case of withdrawal

  • Shopping voucher for a partner retailer

Support a cause through the Charity Program

Your marathon can take on a whole new meaning when you commit to a charitable organisation. The Milan Marathon’s charity entries give you the opportunity to race on behalf of one of the event’s partner charities. First, you agree to raise a minimum amount in donations to validate your entry, even if the race is already sold out. This system allows you to add an extra purpose to your marathon while raising funds for one or more worthwhile causes. On race day, charity runners benefit from exclusive services as well as dedicated support in the build-up to the event.

Stay in Italy for the Milan Marathon with an official travel agency

What better excuse to spend a few days in the fashion capital than the Milan Marathon? Like most major international races, the Milan Marathon works with travel agencies offering a range of entry-and-accommodation packages. This route not only secures your race place, but also lets a specialist agency handle the logistics of your trip. You should, however, expect to pay a little more than you would by organising everything yourself. That makes it important to use only official travel agencies affiliated with the race.

Our advice: plan your trip well in advance with the agency.

Run the Milan Marathon as part of a relay team

The Milan Marathon also offers a team relay, ideal for anyone who wants to experience the marathon without running all 42.195 km. Four runners share the distance, making the challenge more accessible while preserving the competitive spirit and camaraderie at the heart of the event. Each team member runs a specific section of the course, with relay handovers taking place in designated zones and logistics arranged by the organisers.

Running the Milan Marathon as a relay is a great way to share the experience with friends, colleagues or clubmates while enjoying the full race organisation and the atmosphere of Milan’s big running celebration. Relay teams also have access to the same race services as individual participants, and group registration is straightforward through the official website, making this a practical and sociable option for runners of different abilities.

The Milan Marathon’s other race formats

If you want to take part over a more manageable distance while enjoying the race atmosphere and services, the Family Run is a natural choice. This friendly, festive event is open to everyone and is ideal for running with family, friends or children. The 4 km course starts on Via Arona, next to the velodrome, and finishes inside the iconic Maspes-Vigorelli Velodrome, at the heart of the Family Run Village. Entry remains affordable at €10, and every participant receives a medal and a T-shirt.

And if you want to run with your four-legged friend, you can enter the “dog race”. Dogs and their owners set off together for a two-kilometre loop in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Entering the Milan Marathon as an elite runner

Elite runners do not need to meet a minimum qualifying time, unlike at some of the world’s major international marathons. The organiser enters top-level athletes by invitation. The Milan Marathon sets aside a limited number of places for the fastest runners, giving them the chance to target a personal best on this fast course. Elite athletes interested in racing in Milan should therefore contact the organiser directly or wait for an official invitation.

This group of athletes also receives several benefits, including an excellent position on the start line, dedicated services and, in some cases, accommodation. At the 2021 edition, Titus Ekiru ran an outstanding 2:02:57 and Hiwot Gebrekidan clocked 2:19:35, confirming the course’s place among the fastest in Italy and even in the world.

If you want to line up for one of Italy’s most prestigious marathons, the safest option is to enter as soon as registration opens. For those looking for a more accessible format, meanwhile, the Family Run offers a chance to experience the event from the inside.
