How to Register for the Athens Marathon ?
To understand the origins of the marathon, we have to go back to 490 BC, when the Greek soldier Pheidippides ran 42.195 km (26.2 miles) from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce Greece’s victory over the Persians—before collapsing from exhaustion. His legendary feat inspired the creation of the Olympic marathon during the first modern Games in Athens in 1896.
Since then, the distance has become a lifelong goal for countless running enthusiasts. It’s this sense of authenticity—a blend of history, mythology, and athletic challenge—that makes the Athens Marathon “The Authentic” one of the most iconic races in the world.
Before you can run this legendary course, you’ll need to secure your bib. Registration options, eligibility requirements, official travel partners… here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your marathon adventure in the birthplace of the sport.
✓ Wondering how to register for the Athens Marathon and secure your spot? Here’s everything you need to know.
| No Lottery, But High Demand

The Athens Marathon owes much of its popularity to its rich history. Each year, the race sells out weeks before the event. Around 21,000 runners line up for the full marathon, while more than 73,000 participants take part across all distances combined.
With such a historic course and strong demand, it’s no surprise that spots disappear quickly. Unlike many major marathons — particularly the World Marathon Majors such as London, New York, Berlin, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, or Sydney — the Athens Marathon doesn’t use a lottery or ballot system. Instead, registration is first come, first served, and you’ll need to act fast on the official website to secure your place.
The organizer offers two registration packages: “Advanced” and “Full.” The latter, more expensive option includes extras such as a race backpack, access to rest facilities, an OASA public transport card, and a ticket to the Acropolis Museum.
For the 2025 edition, registration opened on April 8 at noon, and prices increased as race day approached. The 2025 event is already sold out.
| Travel Packages for a Unique Experience

Athens and Greece are steeped in history—both cultural and sporting—so why not make your marathon goal part of a larger trip? Official partner travel agencies offer packages that handle all the logistics for you: no stress about flights, hotels, or registration.
These agencies typically offer all-inclusive packages (transportation, accommodation, and race entry). Some also include guided tours of major historical sites and museums. While booking through an agency guarantees your spot and adds convenience, it generally costs significantly more than a standard registration. A full list of official partner agencies can be found on the event’s official website.
| Running the Athens Marathon as a Group

Because everything’s more fun with friends, the Athens Marathon offers group registrations. This option allows teams or clubs to register all their members at once, simplifying the process and ensuring everyone gets a bib. Large groups (typically several dozen runners) can collect their race kits either collectively through one representative or individually, depending on what suits them best.
| Become a Volunteer at the Athens Marathon

Running a marathon isn’t for everyone—but you can still be part of the magic! Every year, more than 4,500 volunteers help make the event possible, working across all areas: gear check, course marshaling, aid stations, medal ceremonies, bib distribution, and more. There’s a role for everyone.
If you’re curious about volunteering, you can apply directly through the official Athens Marathon website. Experiencing the race as a volunteer is a great way to be part of its unique atmosphere—and maybe even inspire you to run it yourself one day.
A Legendary Distance in a Legendary Place. For anyone passionate about running and history, the Athens Marathon is a must-do. Few races combine such deep cultural roots with such an emotional running experience. So don’t wait—add the Athens Marathon to your bucket list and register early for the next edition of The Authentic.
