Marathons.com attended Nike’s global conference for the launch of the Pegasus 42 and the ACG Pegasus Trail. And let’s be clear: when Nike unveils a new Pegasus, it’s always a major event. The Pegasus is one of the most iconic franchises from the Swoosh. Since 1982, it has crossed generations, trends, and technological revolutions. Expectations for the Pegasus 42 were high. For this new edition, Nike took a smart approach: preserve the model’s DNA while injecting a real dose of innovation. A full-length curved Air Zoom unit now runs through the midsole for more forefoot dynamism. The Pegasus gains propulsion without losing its identity as an accessible, versatile running shoe. And the good news doesn’t stop there. Nike is also expanding the franchise with a true trail version, the ACG Pegasus Trail, featuring reinforced materials and a brand-new outsole designed for gravel and light trails.

| Nike Pegasus 42: heritage meets innovation

Nike’s message during the conference was clear: keep the Pegasus DNA—but modernize the underfoot experience. The Pegasus 42 remains a versatile, accessible daily trainer. But this version introduces significant updates.

New ReactX foam
Same philosophy, better performance: +15% more energy return compared to the previous version. ReactX delivers durable cushioning built to handle everyday mileage.

Major upgrade: full-length Air Zoom unit
This is the big change. Previously, the Pegasus featured two Air Zoom units—one in the heel and one in the forefoot. Now, there’s a single curved Air Zoom unit running the entire length of the shoe. It acts almost like a plate—but more flexible and forgiving. The goal: add propulsion while maintaining a smooth, enjoyable ride. This may be the most fun and dynamic Pegasus in years.

More forefoot propulsion
Nike added 3 mm of additional cushioning under the forefoot without increasing overall stack height elsewhere—a real technical achievement. The shoe still measures 37 mm at the heel and 27 mm at the forefoot (10 mm drop). The toe spring is also more pronounced, naturally encouraging forward momentum. And a detail many runners will appreciate: more toe box space up front.

“We’ve taken what runners have always loved about
the Pegasus franchise and turned it into the best
version yet with the Pegasus 42. This shoe provides a
balance of consistent elements that look and feel
connected to its legacy, coupled with new innovation
to make it even more iconic, in a Nike-only way.”

| The Pegasus 42 can (almost) do it all

In short, the Pegasus is the quintessential running shoe. Nike positions it as an accessible model capable of handling everything from easy runs to tempo sessions. With its classic structure and modern dynamic technologies, it suits nearly every runner profile:
Beginners
Runners seeking a versatile, accessible model
Elites using it for easy days in their rotation
Runners who prefer a slightly closer-to-the-ground feel over ultra-maximalist shoes

In a world dominated by towering midsoles, the Pegasus 42 remains more traditional—moderate cushioning, yet protective enough. For experienced runners with multiple-shoe rotations, it’s ideal for daily aerobic runs. For faster, more intense sessions, stepping up to the Vomero line might make sense.

| ACG Pegasus Trail: an invitation to explore

Another highlight of the conference was the trail adaptation. And this isn’t just a simple variation—the ACG Pegasus Trail stands on its own.

Nike observed the rise of gravel running: more runners want to explore trails without jumping straight into highly technical models like the ACG Ultrafly or ACG Zegama. The ACG Pegasus Trail answers that demand perfectly.

The shoe was developed with input from elite ACG athletes such as Lauren Gregory, as well as hundreds of amateur trail runners who tested prototypes, helping refine comfort and durability.

“Building on the storied Pegasus foundation, we set
out to create our most versatile trail shoe yet –
ready for trail, gravel and road alike. It’s our most
capable and versatile workhorse to date, thanks to
insights from our global testing network and the All
Conditions Racing Department.”

Director, ACG Footwear

ReactX cushioning underfoot
The same energetic ReactX foam found in the Pegasus 42 road version is present—but without the Air Zoom unit, which is more road-focused. The trail version sits slightly lower for enhanced stability.

More forefoot space
Designed specifically for trail runners, the wider toe box reduces friction—especially important on long runs and downhill sections.

Breathable, ultra-durable mesh
Durability was a priority. Nike reinforced the upper with robust technical materials capable of handling all conditions. Rubber overlays protect the forefoot from debris, while breathable fabrics maintain airflow.

All Terrain Compound 2.0 outsole
The outsole has been completely reworked:
+30% more grip
+25% greater abrasion resistance
Multidirectional hexagonal lugs

The goal: ensure a smooth transition from road to gravel while providing confidence on light trails.

This isn’t built for UTMB-level technical ultras—but it’s perfect for:
Gravel roads
Forest paths
Light trails
Mixed-surface runs

| What you need to know

With the Pegasus 42, Nike delivers a major evolution of its iconic model while preserving what made it successful. It doesn’t reinvent its identity—but it becomes more dynamic and even more versatile thanks to the full-length Air Zoom unit.

The ACG Pegasus Trail opens a new door: a less compartmentalized, more hybrid, more adventurous kind of running. For road runners curious about trails—or those who frequently run mixed terrain—it’s an ideal option.

Both models confirm Nike’s ambition to position the Pegasus as the running shoe: the one you learn to run in, the one you lace up daily. The Pegasus remains synonymous with versatility and accessibility—now with even more fun and propulsion in every stride.

The Pegasus 42 is still the Pegasus. Just better. A staple. A pillar of the running world. And the ACG Trail version? An invitation to explore.

The Pegasus 42 and ACG Pegasus Trail will be available April 9 on nike.com and at specialty retailers.
