Sydney Marathon: The 7th Event in the World Majors Series

06/11/2024 17:33

Sydney joins the World Majors circuit, standing alongside Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. This news was announced just days after the New York Marathon took place. It is the first marathon to be added to this prestigious list since Tokyo joined in 2013.

A masterpiece of precision for a diamond in the rough

The TCS Sydney Marathon, with its renowned course, applied to have its name proudly listed among the other World Majors three years ago. After a long and rigorous process, the event is set to make history. It is the first marathon in the Southern Hemisphere to be admitted into this circuit. The Marathon has proven itself, meeting all the criteria of an elite race: iconic coastal views, historic landmarks… And no fewer than 20,272 participants on September 14th, showcasing its growing popularity. This course, which pays homage to the 2000 Olympics route, is expected to attract over 33,000 marathoners by 2025, according to the New South Wales government.

From 6 to 9 races, the Abbott Marathon Majors family is expanding

The inclusion of the Sydney Marathon in the World Majors circuit will take effect from 2025. The next edition is scheduled for August 31, 2025, marking the first edition under its new prestigious status. Now, crossing the finish line of 7 marathons is required to earn the coveted Abbott World Marathon Majors medal. But what will this new medal look like?

Other marathons are already on the waiting list to join the ranks of the world’s top marathons. Cape Town, South Africa, and Shanghai, China, are expected to be the next to join the elite club in 2026 and 2027 respectively. The race may soon become one of 9 stars rather than 7, starting in 2027.
