The funniest marathon runner excuses

28/02/2025 01:10

Over time, marathon runners have become experts at finding excuses as creative as they are funny when they encounter setbacks. Here’s a selection of the most amusing excuses heard at the finish line.

1 “I was too busy admiring the scenery”rotte »

The course had some amazing views, and I couldn’t resist soaking it all in. Who needs to rush when you’ve got mountains, rivers, and city skylines to appreciate?

2 “My shoes were too new, they weren’t broken in yet”

Wearing brand-new sneakers on race day? Bad idea. Get ready for blisters and burning feet!

3 “I saw a photographer, I had to slow down to make sure I got a good picture”

Because in official photos, you have to look your best, even if it costs a few precious seconds. Personal record can wait…

4 “Strava crashed, I lost track of my progress”

Technology is amazing… until it decides to crash mid-effort. Thanks, temperamental GPS!

5 “I tried a new energy drink… my stomach didn’t love it”

Culinary experiments during a race can bring surprising, sometimes explosive results. Try to finish the race like a bomb before you explode at the finish line.

6 “A supporter reached out for a high-five, I lost my balance”

The enthusiasm of the crowd is motivating. But watch out for unsteady high-fives! It’s not easy being a star.

7 “I confused the remaining kilometers with miles, thought I was almost done”

A little conversion error, and there goes your morale. Thanks, math and our friends across the pond!

8 “My bib came loose, I had to stop to fix it”

How to lose seconds for nothing. A minor technical issue that becomes a major excuse. But safety first!

9 “I tried to take a selfie while running… and tripped”

The quest for the perfect selfie can sometimes lead to memorable falls. Send us your best selfie-fail shots next time to share this moment of glory with everyone!

10 “I went the wrong way, followed the half-marathon runners”

Come on! In the excitement of the race, it’s easy to follow the wrong crowd. Or maybe tried to shortcut? We see you!

Although these excuses are humorous, they perfectly (or not) reflect the challenges marathoners can face. Ultimately, the important thing is to participate and laugh about it, right?
