Montpellier Run Festival brings 16,000 runners together for a weekend of celebration
The Montpellier Run Festival set new attendance records on April 18 and 19, drawing 16,000 runners and 7,000 festival-goers. It has become an unmissable fixture on the Occitanie racing calendar.
Mid-April is never all about running. Even with races scheduled throughout the weekend, from the kids’ events, 5K and Ekiden on Saturday to the half marathon, marathon and 10K on Sunday, Montpellier Run Festival stands out as an event where the party spirit is every bit as important as the sport.
On Saturday evening, 7,000 festival-goers made their way to the Promenade du Peyrou to enjoy a varied programme from 6 p.m. onwards, soaking up the electronic sounds as the last light faded from the sky. Event organisers Playground had set out to make the third edition one to remember. They succeeded: with free entry to the festival and reasonably priced offerings, there was every opportunity to get the most out of the experience, helped along by signs that suddenly made perfect sense: “Run faster, the bar’s about to close! ”.
This year’s new addition: the Matmut #NésPourBouger 5K
To make running even more accessible, Montpellier welcomed a new event: the Matmut #NésPourBouger 5K. As its name suggests, the race is simply about bringing people together to run, with no performance target. Before running becomes a question of time, it is first and foremost an accessible way to get moving. Put one foot in front of the other, gradually pick up the pace, move from walking to running, and discover the simple pleasure of being active.
The untimed 5K sold out for its launch, with 3,000 participants on the start line. It was a success for an event designed as an invitation to get your body moving and an excellent way to stay fit. “The aim was not to stop, and we managed it, so that’s the main thing!” two young women said with broad smiles on the event’s social media channels.
An event nearing gender parity
Women made up 47% of the field and men 53%, with both taking part in at least one of the six events. It is an impressive split, edging towards parity and reflecting the accessibility and diversity of this running festival, which brought together every kind of participant, from beginners to more experienced runners.
The event once again demonstrated its undeniable social value, with performance far from its only purpose and a powerful sense of solidarity running through it. Many participants highlighted the atmosphere and the support from the large crowds lining the course. “There were volunteers everywhere!” one participant said. “A great atmosphere, with so many people there to motivate us” added one runner.
A standout course in perfect weather
What better way to explore Montpellier than by running through streets cleared of traffic? This year’s course offered participants a full tour of the city’s identity. Marathon runners got a double dose of the Hérault capital, covering two 21.1 km laps through the historic city centre, including the Écusson district, as well as more outlying areas such as Grammont and hotel and vineyard estates like Verchant in Castelnau-le-Lez.
Every finisher got to savour the finish beneath the Arc de Triomphe on Rue Foch. Both days unfolded under brilliant sunshine and in ideal conditions: cool morning temperatures made it possible to run without being exposed to intense heat, before gradually rising throughout the day to reach 24°C.
The third edition of Montpellier Run Festival completely transformed the Hérault capital for a weekend. Whether they came to get active or test themselves, finishers discovered another side of running, one that celebrates the sport as much as the pleasure of being together, in an unmistakably Mediterranean atmosphere.
