Road Test Camp: Our Running Shoe Test Summaries in the Daily Trainer Category
Powered by Finishers and Marathons.com, the first-ever “Road Test Camp” brought together 20 runners, 10 men and 10 women of all ability levels, at Lyon’s prestigious Matmut Stadium from March 23 to 26. Their brief: to test, compare and independently assess the best running shoes on the market. Behind this ambitious concept lies a simple but radical idea: putting real-world performance and on-foot feel back at the heart of product evaluation. Based on feedback from these varied runners, a summary was produced for every shoe across four categories: daily trainer, super trainer, racer and gravel. First up: the daily trainer category.
► CATEGORY: DAILY TRAINER
ADIDAS HYPERBOOST EDGE
SUMMARY – ADIDAS HYPERBOOST EDGE
➜ The adidas Hyperboost Edge breaks the daily trainer mould with a distinctly lively ride designed to combine versatility and a sense of speed in everyday training.
From the moment they put it on, testers noted generally successful comfort, with some describing a slipper-like feel thanks to the welcoming upper and relatively accommodating toe box. The fit was considered precise, sometimes snug, with the upper wrapping the foot securely. A few reservations emerged around the collar and tongue, which some found stiff or prone to creating pressure points. The first impression therefore ranged from immediate comfort to a shoe that demands careful fine-tuning.
Once moving, the shoe held the foot effectively. The lacing delivered a good lockdown and the overall support felt reassuring, particularly for narrow feet. Some testers, however, mentioned less convincing ankle support and a sense of heel movement, while others found the fit too tight. This technical character confirms that the shoe requires a certain adjustment period.
Stability proved more divisive. Although the platform felt stable in a straight line to some testers, the stack height and relatively narrow base could create lateral instability, particularly when changing direction. Several testers stressed the need for strong ankles and a controlled stride, placing this model at the demanding end of what is expected from a daily trainer.
The shoe really stands out in its transition and responsiveness. A pronounced rocker, combined with a lively, bouncy foam, creates a clear forward push. The sensation of speed is immediate, making it easy to pick up the pace and hold faster efforts. Unusually dynamic for this category, it can sometimes feel closer to a tempo or threshold shoe. Underfoot comfort remains good, despite an occasionally firm ride and a slight lack of flexibility.
➜ Overall, the adidas Hyperboost Edge is an atypical, highly dynamic and versatile daily trainer, but one that makes demands of its wearer. It will appeal to intermediate and experienced runners looking for a shoe that injects pace into everyday runs while retaining a good level of comfort. Less suited to beginners or runners prioritising maximum security and softness, it is aimed at those who want to put some speed into their daily training.
OVERALL COMFORT: 8.1
KIPRUN KIPRIDE MAX
SUMMARY – KIPRUN KIPRIDE MAX
➜ The KIPRUN Kipride Max takes a maximum-comfort approach to the daily trainer while retaining enough liveliness to handle everyday runs effectively.
From the first try-on, testers noticed the soft, enveloping feel. The fit is welcoming, with a plush midsole that absorbs impact immediately without feeling excessively mushy. The foot sits securely in a comfortable, confidence-inspiring upper, although some testers found the mesh slightly thick and warm. Overall, it delivers a reassuring ride that makes it easy to head out for a run.
The foot hold confirms this comfort-first approach. Support is consistent, with the foot well centred from heel to toe and the lacing easy to adjust and effective. Some testers did report less convincing heel lockdown or a slightly bulky feel linked to the thickness of the materials. Even so, the shoe remains stable and reassuring across a wide range of foot shapes and running styles.
On stability, testers largely agreed that the platform is dependable, especially in a straight line. Grip was even highlighted as a strength, inspiring confidence on asphalt and slightly rougher surfaces. Combined with its generous cushioning, this stability delivers exactly what is expected of a comfort-focused daily trainer.
The foot transition feels smooth and natural, striking a good balance between flexibility and responsiveness. It is not a pure performance shoe, but the reactive foam and gentle rocker make it capable of picking up the pace. Its character nevertheless remains firmly geared towards easy to moderate efforts, where the plush, protective cushioning is at its best. Overall comfort was universally praised, particularly on longer runs.
➜ In short, the Kipride Max is a highly comfortable, stable and reassuring daily trainer, ideal for easy runs, recovery and longer distances at moderate pace. It will particularly suit runners looking for protection and softness, especially beginners and intermediates, while offering enough liveliness to keep the stride from feeling dull.
OVERALL COMFORT: 8.6
ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28
SUMMARY – ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28
➜ Based on feedback from 20 testers, the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28 clearly confirms its place as a comfort-focused daily trainer for easy mileage and recovery. It is widely seen as a reassuring, protective and accessible shoe, designed more for building kilometres at moderate pace than for faster sessions.
The clearest takeaway concerns overall comfort, unanimously recognised as one of the shoe’s main strengths. Numerous testers described a slipper-like feel that was immediately pleasant, with an excellent step-in experience. The upper was considered soft, high-quality and enveloping, while the tongue earned repeated praise for its comfort and ability to spread lacing pressure evenly. Overall support was also well received, particularly around the midfoot and heel, creating a secure feel on easy or longer runs.
Stability was the other major strength, frequently mentioned despite the substantial sole volume. Testers highlighted the reassuring base, good foot alignment and stable ride, making the shoe suitable for a broad range of runners, especially those prioritising protection and confidence. Several testers also noted good surface versatility on roads and compact paths.
Opinions on cushioning were more nuanced but remained largely positive. The shoe was described as soft, protective and highly absorbent, particularly well suited to recovery runs and long easy efforts. Some testers appreciated the balance between firmness and softness, which avoids an overly squishy feel. Others, however, found it too damped, somewhat stiff or slightly lacking in bounce depending on their build and expectations.
The lack of dynamism was the panel’s most consistent criticism. Most testers felt the shoe lacked response, propulsion and energy return when the pace increased. The forefoot transition was sometimes considered unnatural, and several lighter or faster runners felt the shoe held them back rather than helping them accelerate. In that respect, the Gel-Nimbus 28 is not a natural choice for tempo work or faster training.
A few secondary comments concerned the forefoot fit: some testers found the toe box slightly narrow or low, while others considered it roomy enough. The volume will therefore work very well for some foot shapes, but runners with wide feet or a tendency towards rubbing should pay close attention.
➜ Overall, the Gel-Nimbus 28 is seen as a safe bet in the premium comfort segment, ideal for runners seeking protection, stability and an enjoyable everyday ride. It will particularly appeal to intermediate to heavier runners, or anyone prioritising recovery and easy mileage. Lighter runners and those looking for snap may be left wanting. A very coherent comfort daily trainer, but less convincing when versatility and performance are the priority.
OVERALL COMFORT: 8.2
BROOKS GLYCERIN 23
SUMMARY – BROOKS GLYCERIN 23
➜ The Brooks Glycerin 23 comes across as a comfort-focused daily trainer offering stability and moderate versatility, with more divided opinions on cushioning and responsiveness. Feedback from the 20 testers describes a reassuring, accessible and well-made shoe that is particularly relevant for everyday runs, easy outings and recovery.
The unanimous strength was its step-in comfort. Testers described a pleasant fit from the outset, with an enveloping upper, a cocoon-like feel and good overall heel support. Several also praised the generous tongue and padded collar, reinforcing the shoe’s premium feel.
The forefoot fit, however, prompted more disagreement. Some found the toe box spacious and suitable for wide feet, while others considered it too tight, too short or prone to creating pressure on the toes. The fit therefore works well for certain runners but is not universally accommodating. Thick, round laces were also repeatedly mentioned as an area for improvement, with lockdown sometimes judged insufficient or imprecise.
Cushioning was generally perceived as protective and stable, particularly under the heel. Several testers described the foam as pleasant and comfortably soft without going too far, making it well suited to absorbing impact on easy runs.
A significant part of the panel, however, found the ride firmer than expected from a Glycerin, especially in the forefoot. Some mentioned a pronounced ground feel or a lack of softness over longer distances. The result is a more balanced and controlled platform than a truly maximalist one.
The Glycerin 23 was primarily identified as a shoe for slow to moderate runs, easy aerobic mileage and recovery. Its stability and efficient transition reassured many testers.
Responsiveness was more divisive. Most testers found the shoe not especially playful and limited once the pace picked up, while a minority noted useful versatility for light tempo work or faster finishes. It appears more comfortable with consistency than intensity.
Perceived material quality was praised, from the robust mesh to the serious finish and premium construction. Breathability, however, divided opinion: some found it well ventilated, while others found it too warm, particularly because of the thick, generously padded upper.
➜ Overall, the Brooks Glycerin 23 confirms its position as a premium daily trainer that is comfortable and stable, ideal for runners seeking security, controlled softness and everyday mileage. It will particularly suit neutral runners, from beginners to intermediates, and anyone who prefers easy-paced running.
OVERALL COMFORT: 7.3
CIRCLE SUPERNATURAL RUNNER
SUMMARY – CIRCLE SUPERNATURAL RUNNER
➜ The Circle Supernatural Runner stands out immediately as an unusual proposition in the daily trainer segment. Feedback from the 20 testers highlights a shoe with a strong personality that will not appeal to everyone, offering a distinctive alternative to today’s market standards.
The unanimous strength was the overall fit and step-in comfort. Numerous testers described a slipper-like feel, with an upper that follows the foot’s shape and provides enveloping support. The generous forefoot was appreciated, especially by runners looking for more room around the toes. The shoe was also considered light and pleasant for everyday wear, with excellent comfort for walking and lifestyle use.
Another strength was its natural stability, thanks to the close-to-the-ground platform. Several testers appreciated the low setup for the control, ground connection and healthy transition it provides. This more minimalist approach will particularly appeal to runners who value natural sensations or want to strengthen the foot.
The design also emerged as a major asset. Testers found the shoe original, modern and visually successful. It has a strong identity, combining urban performance with everyday wear. The brand’s responsible approach was also viewed positively, adding to the product’s overall appeal.
The main areas for improvement concern its role as a daily running trainer. Most testers felt the running experience would benefit from more cushioning, particularly on long runs and recovery outings. Ground feel is pronounced, which will suit fans of firmer shoes but may surprise runners accustomed to today’s softer standards.
A few adjustments to the dynamic lockdown could also improve versatility, notably the lace length, collar and heel comfort, and stability during changes of direction.
➜ Overall, the Circle Supernatural Runner is an innovative and bold shoe, ideal for runners seeking a more natural experience, a running/lifestyle hybrid and an alternative to highly maximalist models. With targeted improvements to cushioning and running smoothness, it has real potential to stand apart in the market.
OVERALL COMFORT: 4.9
CRAFT ENDURANCE 3
SUMMARY – CRAFT ENDURANCE 3
➜ The Craft Endurance 3 is a daily trainer with a strong personality and a clear identity: light, stable and designed for runners who want direct ground feel and an active stride. Feedback from the 20 testers was notably consistent across several key areas, confirming the model’s coherence.
The unanimous strength was its light weight. The resulting sense of flow encourages a natural, lively stride and was particularly appreciated when changing pace, during tempo sessions and on faster runs. Several testers also highlighted its ability to respond as intensity increases, giving it a more performance-oriented feel than a pure comfort trainer. The Endurance 3 should appeal to runners who like to stay engaged with their stride.
Overall stability was another recurring strength. Many testers found the heel reassuring, with good rearfoot lockdown and a secure hold. The platform inspires confidence, particularly on straight-line efforts and steady paces. This stable character adds to its appeal as a reliable everyday shoe.
The fit feels precise and technical, with effective midfoot support for most testers. This construction will particularly suit narrow to standard feet and runners who prefer a close connection to the shoe. The mesh was considered breathable, a useful advantage for runs in mild to warm conditions.
Underfoot, testers described a firm, energetic ride that deliberately moves away from the market’s very softest options. This brings greater ground feedback and responsiveness, making the Endurance 3 an interesting alternative for runners who prefer precision and mechanical efficiency to highly soft cushioning.
A few improvements would nevertheless be welcome: some testers wanted more long-distance comfort, greater forefoot flexibility or a slightly less prominent collar around the ankle. The lacing system was also considered an area for refinement by some runners.
➜ In summary, the Craft Endurance 3 is a distinctive, light and dynamic daily trainer aimed primarily at runners seeking stability, efficiency and direct running sensations. A shoe with a clear personality, particularly suited to active runners who like a firm, responsive ride.
OVERALL COMFORT: 5.2
MIZUNO WAVE RIDER 29
SUMMARY – MIZUNO WAVE RIDER 29
➜ Overall, the feedback positions the Mizuno Wave Rider 29 as a comfort-focused, stable and accessible everyday training shoe. Better suited to easy runs than faster sessions, it is seen as a reassuring and versatile option for basic training, although its cushioning and responsiveness appear modest compared with leading shoes in the category.
The first consensus concerned step-in comfort. Many testers noted a pleasant feel from the outset, with a soft upper, breathable mesh and comfortable tongue. The relatively generous forefoot was appreciated, particularly by runners with wider feet, and several testers praised the room in the toe box.
Overall stability was another important strength. Several testers mentioned the secure base, well-held heel and neutral ride, without intrusive guidance features. This more traditional approach will appeal to runners seeking a simple, dependable shoe for everyday use.
Weight was generally considered reasonable, with the shoe perceived as fairly light or at least not burdensome in use.
The main drawback was the level of cushioning, judged insufficient or too firm by most of the panel. Many described a close-to-the-ground feel with pronounced ground feedback, particularly in the forefoot. On long runs or recovery outings, several testers felt it lacked softness and protection.
Responsiveness was the other recurring criticism. The Wave Rider 29 was frequently described as lacking bounce, energy return and reactivity. It is more convincing at moderate pace than when accelerating or tackling sessions that demand speed.
Forefoot lockdown and the lacing system also divided opinion. Some appreciated the volume, but many felt the forefoot was too wide, allowing the foot to move inside the shoe. The laces, often considered thin or slippery, were another repeated criticism.
➜ The Mizuno Wave Rider 29 is a traditional daily trainer that is stable and comfortable, suited to beginners or runners looking for a straightforward shoe for short to moderate easy runs. Runners seeking generous cushioning, a more secure fit or a livelier ride may find it behind current standards in the segment.
OVERALL COMFORT: 6.4
NEW BALANCE 1080 V15
SUMMARY – NEW BALANCE 1080 V15
➜ The New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v15 clearly confirms its position as a premium comfort-focused daily trainer, designed primarily for everyday runs, relaxed long outings and recovery. Across the 20 testers, the dominant impression was of a welcoming fit, generous cushioning and an accessible, reassuring and enjoyable ride.
The unanimous strength was immediate comfort. Most testers described a slipper-like feel, with good forefoot volume, an enveloping upper and generally satisfactory support, particularly through the midfoot and heel for some runners. Fresh Foam X was praised for its softness, impact absorption and versatility across different foot strikes. Several testers also noted a good balance between cushioning and bounce, producing a smooth ride during easy aerobic running. The shoe inspires confidence and makes you want to run, particularly on easy or regular outings.
Versatility for easy mileage was another frequently cited strength. The 1080 v15 is seen as an excellent option for runners looking for one shoe to cover daily runs, recovery jogs and longer outings at moderate pace. The transition is generally smooth, with a rocker effect that some testers appreciated.
Several limitations nevertheless stood out. The most common was a lack of dynamism at faster paces. Although some testers found the midsole responsive, most felt the shoe reached its limits when intensity rose. It remains more comfort-oriented than performance-oriented.
Stability was the other main area for improvement. Several runners reported that the very soft cushioning could create unwanted movement, particularly around corners, on lateral landings or for less neutral strides. Some narrow-footed testers also felt the foot was not locked down enough inside the shoe.
A few more isolated comments concerned mesh breathability, with some finding it thick or warm, as well as areas of stiffness or discomfort around the forefoot.
➜ In summary, the 1080 v15 wins with its high-end comfort and ease of use. It is a strong choice for runners seeking a protective, comfortable everyday shoe, geared more towards enjoyment and consistency than speed.
OVERALL COMFORT: 8.0
NIKE VOMERO 18
SUMMARY – NIKE VOMERO 18
➜ The Nike Vomero 18 clearly belongs to the comfort-focused daily trainer category, with cushioning and protection for easy runs at the centre of its identity. The combined feedback from 20 testers points to a very comfortable shoe, but one with little interest in speed or performance.
The most widely shared strength was overall comfort and cushioning quality. Most testers described a soft, protective feel, particularly under the heel, which absorbs impact effectively. This makes the shoe well suited to easy runs, recovery and runners looking for a secure, low-impact ride. Foot hold was also well received, with effective overall lockdown from the lacing and a reassuring fit.
Several recurring limitations emerged. The most significant was a lack of responsiveness and a transition that could feel stiff or unnatural. Some testers described a rocking or block-like roll that limits stride fluidity. The shoe is therefore poorly suited to speed sessions or faster work.
The fit was another important point of disagreement. Several testers found the forefoot narrow, which could bother wider feet or cause rubbing. Others appreciated the overall support, particularly those with narrow feet, reinforcing the impression of a distinctly shaped fit. Some also mentioned details that could be improved, including a thick tongue and laces that were too long.
Stability was generally appreciated, although some testers felt the shoe lacked balance or had inconsistent internal firmness. The mesh was described as high-quality and breathable by some, while others found it too warm or insufficiently ventilated.
➜ Overall, the Nike Vomero 18 is a comfortable, stable and protective shoe, ideal for slow runs and recovery, but limited by its lack of dynamism and relatively narrow fit.
OVERALL COMFORT: 7.1
ON CLOUMONSTER 3
SUMMARY – ON CLOUMONSTER 3
➜ The On Cloudmonster 3, tested here as a daily trainer, drew mixed reactions, balancing interest in its lively ride against strong criticism of its comfort and stability.
The clearest takeaway was the shoe’s highly structured, rigid character. Many testers described pronounced firmness underfoot, with cushioning that felt insufficient or simply unusual depending on the runner. Some appreciated the rigidity for its responsiveness and propulsion at faster paces, but it quickly became limiting on easy runs and recovery sessions. Several testers also mentioned a “break” in the transition or an unnatural roll, suggesting a shoe that favours speed over relaxation.
Stability was more ambiguous. Some runners, particularly those with narrow feet, appreciated the overall support and well-fitting mesh. Others reported instability on uneven ground and a lack of confidence underfoot, especially away from the road. That impression was reinforced by inconsistent grip, with some testers finding traction insufficient on certain surfaces and running accordingly with greater caution.
Comfort and fit produced highly varied feedback. The mesh was unanimously recognised as high-quality, light and breathable, but the fit divided opinion: some testers felt well supported, while others reported pressure over the instep or heel, or excessive forefoot volume that allowed slight internal movement.
The shoe was often described as light, dynamic and responsive, with real potential for faster paces and tempo sessions. Its status as a daily trainer was nevertheless questioned, as several testers found it too technical, too rigid or not comfortable enough for versatile everyday use.
➜ In summary, the Cloudmonster 3 is a performance- and speed-oriented shoe that is interesting for faster efforts, but less convincing as a comfortable, stable everyday trainer.
OVERALL COMFORT: 6.5
SKECHERS AERO BURST
SUMMARY – SKECHERS AERO BURST
➜ The Skechers Aero Burst is a clearly comfort-focused maximalist daily trainer, with broadly positive feedback on cushioning and impact protection but clear weaknesses in fit precision and responsiveness.
The unanimous strength was cushioning comfort. The generous foam delivers a notably soft feel, particularly for heel strikers, with a smooth and protective transition. Several testers highlighted its ability to absorb impact, making it pleasant for slow runs and recovery outings. The heel was often described as welcoming and comfortable, reinforcing its easy-run character.
The fit, however, was the shoe’s main weakness. Testers generally found it too voluminous, with a wide toe box and insufficient midfoot and heel support. Many reported a sense of movement or even foot slippage, particularly with standard foot shapes. The generous sizing further reduced lockdown and sometimes made it difficult to optimise the lacing. That excess volume compromises confidence while running.
In performance terms, the shoe was unanimously considered lacking in dynamism. Its perceived weight and substantial foam create a sense of passive stiffness, with limited response for faster sessions. Several testers considered it ideal for slow endurance but restricted once intensity increased. Breathability was also judged average, with the thick construction creating a warm, enclosed feel.
➜ In summary, the Skechers Aero Burst is highly relevant for recovery runs and easy outings thanks to its protective cushioning and overall comfort. Its considerable volume, limited lockdown and low responsiveness, however, restrict its appeal for runners seeking precision, lightness and versatility.
OVERALL COMFORT: 6.1
UNDER ARMOUR VELOCITI DISTANCE
SUMMARY – UNDER ARMOUR VELOCITI DISTANCE
➜ Feedback from the 20 testers highlights a hybrid shoe that sits between a conventional daily trainer and a more tempo-oriented performance model. Overall impressions of the Under Armour Velocity are mixed, with recognised technical strengths but an uneven comfort and fit experience depending on the runner.
Support and stability were the areas of consensus. Most testers highlighted excellent foot lockdown, particularly through the midfoot and heel, reinforced by effective, reassuring lacing. The structure creates welcome stability, including on uneven ground and gravel. That support was occasionally considered excessive, however, with an overly close fit creating pressure around the collar or malleoli.
Cushioning was a major point of division. The midsole was widely described as firm, even rigid, particularly under the heel and forefoot. Some testers appreciated this choice for its dynamism and energy return at faster paces, but most regretted the lack of softness for easy aerobic running or recovery. This firmness limits overall comfort, especially at low speeds or for lighter runners.
Responsiveness and transition were viewed positively, with a rocker and a pronounced forward roll. Some testers nevertheless felt this made the shoe a poor fit for the daily trainer category, better suited to active sessions such as tempo and threshold work than slow runs. A few even described it as too dynamic for conventional everyday training.
Fit is a key area for improvement. Several testers mentioned an unusual shape, wide at the front and more fitted at the rear, which could create a sense of movement or foot slippage. This led to toe rubbing and a lack of overall precision, particularly for narrow feet. Wider feet appeared to fare better.
Breathability was unanimously criticised. The mesh was considered thick, warm and poorly ventilated, limiting thermal comfort, especially in summer. The shoe’s generally enveloping fit compounds this issue.
Weight and a sense of heaviness were also mentioned regularly, placing the shoe outside current standards for lightness in this segment.
➜ In summary, the Under Armour Velocity stands out for its stability, lockdown and dynamic character, but suffers from limited comfort, marked rigidity and an imperfect fit. It appears better suited to runners seeking a structured shoe for moderate to faster paces than to those looking for an accessible, versatile option for all everyday runs.
