Powered by Finishers and Marathons.com, the very first Road Test Camp brought together 20 runners, 10 men and 10 women of all ability levels, from March 23 to 26 at Lyon’s prestigious Matmut Stadium. Their mission was a first: to test, compare and assess the best running shoes on the market, entirely independently. The concept was ambitious but straightforward: put real-world performance and on-foot feel back at the heart of product testing. Based on feedback from this varied group of runners, we produced a roundup for every shoe across four categories: daily trainer, super trainer, racer and gravel. Part two focuses on the super trainer category.

► CATEGORY: SUPER TRAINER

BROOKS HYPERION MAX 3

ROUNDUP: BROOKS HYPERION MAX 3

Take your training to another level with the Brooks Hyperion Max 3, a Super Trainer that strikes a new balance between generous cushioning and hard-charging energy return for demanding runners.

The Hyperion Max 3 makes an immediate impression with its unusual build and imposing looks. Testers often referred to it as a “boat shoe”. The first step-in feel is plush but very snug. Built as a one-piece upper with an integrated tongue, the bootie delivers an instant sock-like fit that holds the foot firmly. Some testers found it difficult to put on, while the toe box felt narrow, even oppressive, for wider feet. But the quality of the mesh and the secure heel hold immediately reinforce its premium positioning.

Once moving, the contrast between the shoe’s bulky appearance and its lively ride is striking. The transition from the first few steps to faster running reveals the real character of this Super Trainer. The fit is extremely precise: effective lacing and a stiff heel counter keep the foot perfectly aligned. It may feel slightly heavy or rigid during the first few metres at an easy pace, but it comes alive as the pace rises. A highly pronounced rocker helps roll the foot forward and creates a mechanical propulsion reminiscent of racing shoes.

The Hyperion Max 3’s defining quality is its explosive responsiveness. Testers highlighted exceptional bounce, often comparing it to a “spring-loaded heel”, which supports excellent running economy during threshold and tempo sessions. At faster paces, particularly below 4:00/km, the stiff sole, which many testers felt suggested a plate, becomes a major asset for holding speed without excessive effort. The trade-off is stability. With a high stack and a relatively narrow profile, the shoe can feel unpredictable through tight corners or on uneven surfaces such as cobblestones. It calls for some caution and strong ankles to handle its technical character.

The Brooks Hyperion Max 3 is a formidable training partner, capable of recreating race-day sensations while protecting the joints with its effective cushioning. It is ideally suited to marathoners and middle-distance runners looking to sharpen long intervals and quality sessions. The model is best suited to runners with narrow to medium-width feet who want a technical shoe that turns every landing into a dynamic push forward.

MIZUNO NEO ZEN 2

ROUNDUP: MIZUNO NEO ZEN 2

The Mizuno Neo Zen 2 clearly positions itself as a Super Trainer that deftly combines an airy feel with slipper-like comfort to make every training kilometre count.

The step-in feel earns unanimous praise: this is a genuine performance slipper. Testers describe a high-quality mesh that is soft and highly breathable, wrapping the foot in immediate comfort. The traditional tongue is replaced by an elastic integrated bootie, creating a sock-like fit that eliminates unnecessary friction and feels effortless from the outset. A few testers noticed pressure points across the instep during initial adjustment, but the prevailing impression is plush, almost luxurious comfort. The most enthusiastic runners called it a “cloud”.

On the road, the test highlights the shoe’s technical versatility. Foot hold is considered excellent, thanks to an upper that follows the foot’s contours closely, although the long laces sometimes require careful adjustment for a secure fit. Stability is balanced and reassuring on dry roads. However, the highly flexible foam and tall stack can create slight heel instability during abrupt changes of direction or on poor surfaces. Like many shoes built around comfort and bounce, it rewards a more stable foot strike to unlock its full potential without losing balance.

The shoe’s standout dynamic qualities are its smooth transition and natural roll. Unlike competitors with very stiff geometries, this Super Trainer moves fluidly through the stride. The foam provides generous energy return, with responsiveness that emerges more clearly as the pace picks up. Very fast runners may find it lacks a little punch for short, explosive intervals, but it excels at saving muscular energy over time. It works with the runner rather than forcing the stride, making tempo sessions and long, steady efforts feel remarkably easy. It delivers exactly what this category promises: one shoe for everything from active recovery runs to structured workouts.

With the Neo Zen 2, Mizuno successfully combines maximum protection with an engaging response. Its strengths, including exceptional step-in comfort, surprising lightness and protective bounce, make it an ideal shoe for regular runners preparing for a long-distance goal, from the half marathon to the marathon. It is a smart choice for runners looking to preserve their legs without giving up the enjoyment of a lively, fluid and versatile ride.

ADIDAS ADIZERO EVO SL

ROUNDUP: ADIDAS ADIZERO EVO SL

The adidas Adizero EVO SL confirms its place as a light, sharp and performance-focused Super Trainer for runners seeking direct feedback and fast versatility. Its particularly low weight was the clearest standout, praised unanimously. Testers called it “ultralight” and “race-ready”, with an immediate sense of speed.

On the run, the EVO SL impresses with accessible speed. Most participants appreciated how easily it picks up the pace, handles changes of rhythm and performs during quality sessions. It was seen as especially well suited to VO2 max work, intervals, 5K and 10K efforts, track sessions and tempo runs, thanks to a smooth, efficient stride. Several testers also highlighted the effective rocker and quick transition forward, reinforcing its propulsive feel.

Another strength is its close-to-the-ground feel, which brings precision, responsiveness and a strong connection with the stride. This geometry gives the shoe a technical character appreciated by experienced runners, especially those looking for greater control and a cleaner foot strike. The breathable, comfortable upper also contributes to an overall sense of lightness and freedom.

The EVO SL is versatile enough for active easy runs, quality workouts and fast daily training. Some testers even described it as an excellent do-it-all option for experienced runners wanting a lively everyday shoe.

The main areas for improvement concern foot hold, which varies with foot shape, particularly around the forefoot and heel, as well as cushioning that feels deliberately firm over longer distances. That construction nevertheless reinforces the shoe’s performance-first character and direct road feel.

In short, the Adizero EVO SL is a modern, fast and exceptionally light shoe for runners seeking natural feedback and everyday speed. It adds a more minimalist, agile option to the Adizero range, especially convincing at faster paces and over short to middle distances.

ASICS SUPERBLAST 3

ROUNDUP: ASICS SUPERBLAST 3

The ASICS Superblast 3 confirms its place as a volume- and performance-oriented Super Trainer with broad appeal. Testers responded positively to its blend of long-distance comfort, protective cushioning and lively handling, making it a particularly strong option for demanding training blocks.

The unanimous highlight is overall comfort. The foam feels plush without being excessive for most testers and provides excellent muscular protection on long and very long runs. Several reports mention fresher legs and good running economy, strengthening its case as a marathon-training shoe. The upper also feels high quality, with dependable midfoot and heel hold that inspire confidence over time.

The transition and forward drive are another differentiator. Many testers enjoyed the pronounced rocker and the shoe’s ability to guide the stride naturally. Despite its generous volume, the Superblast 3 retains genuine bounce and an effective response, particularly at marathon pace, moderate threshold pace and during progressive runs. Some runners even found it surprisingly quick and easy to accelerate.

The model appears especially effective for heel strikers and runners seeking a smooth, protective ride. Its sweet spot is long runs with changes of pace, premium easy runs and controlled tempo sessions. Testers also noted the perceived durability of the package.

A few caveats remain. Its substantial build can feel bulky to lighter runners or those who prefer minimalist shoes. Some testers wanted more speed at high intensity, particularly for short 5K and 10K efforts. Forefoot fit also varies with foot shape, feeling slightly snug to some and quite roomy to others.

The Superblast 3 delivers a premium, protective and efficient ride, particularly suited to runners looking for one shoe that can handle mileage, comfort and moderate to fast running. A mature, polished and highly coherent choice for modern training.

HOKA MACH 7

ROUNDUP: HOKA MACH 7

The HOKA Mach 7 confirms its place as a versatile Super Trainer for runners seeking a light, efficient shoe that fits easily into a daily rotation. Testers consistently praised its versatility, low weight and dependable overall hold.

The strongest first impression is its light, fluid feel. Many testers described a shoe that “disappears on the foot”, with a natural roll and smooth transition that feels particularly good at tempo, threshold and steady aerobic paces. The Mach 7 is intuitive and easy to run in, equally capable of handling lively easy runs and long efforts with changes of pace.

Fit and foot hold were also widely praised. The upper feels secure, with good heel lockdown and even support throughout the foot. Several testers mentioned the breathable, comfortable mesh, which adds to the overall experience. That close connection to the foot improves control and stability, particularly when changing pace.

Dynamically, the Mach 7 feels responsive and efficient, with more emphasis on cadence and reacceleration than on a pronounced trampoline effect. This direct character will appeal to runners seeking an active, natural stride without excessive foam or an artificial sensation.

There are, however, a few areas to consider. The most common criticism is a slightly snug fit, especially in the forefoot, leading several testers to recommend going up half a size. Some also wanted more softness or energy return for the fastest sessions or high-intensity long runs.

The HOKA Mach 7 stands out as a modern, versatile and capable training shoe for runners wanting one pair that can cover the miles efficiently. More dynamic than maximalist, it will particularly suit those who value lightness, stability and a clean transition.

KIPRUN KIPSTORM TEMPO

ROUNDUP: KIPRUN KIPSTORM TEMPO

The KIPRUN Kipstorm Tempo emerges as a capable, versatile Super Trainer built for faster paces, occupying a credible middle ground between a lively training shoe and an accessible performance model. Testers saw strong potential, particularly for tempo, threshold and marathon sessions, as well as general-purpose training.

The clearest takeaway is its universally recognised liveliness. Testers described a “rocket” that was “surprising” and delivered effective propulsion and strong energy return, especially as the intensity rose. The pronounced rocker helps tip the runner forward and works well from half-marathon to marathon pace. Several testers also mentioned good running economy and how easy it is to hold a target pace.

Overall comfort is another major strength, thanks in part to the slipper-like fit and integrated tongue, which testers generally found comfortable and well positioned. Midfoot hold is frequently praised for its precise, reassuring fit. A few testers reported pressure across the top of the foot or an opening that felt too narrow. Others highlighted good ventilation and the shoe’s ability to smooth out uneven ground.

Its broad range of uses is another strong differentiator. Feedback suggests the Kipstorm Tempo can cover active aerobic running, tempo, threshold, marathon pace and even long-distance racing. Some described it as an excellent “one-shoe solution” for travel or training camps.

Several improvements remain possible. The main concern is lateral stability and heel/ankle hold, which a number of testers found lacking, particularly in corners or during changes of direction. Although some considered the platform stable, the tall stack and rear lockdown produced mixed impressions.

Cushioning and firmness also divide opinion: some like the soft-yet-responsive balance, while others find the shoe too firm for easy runs or lacking heel cushioning.

Overall, the Kipstorm Tempo is seen as a modern, capable and versatile Super Trainer, particularly relevant for runners seeking a lively shoe for faster paces and long distances. The main priorities for improvement are rearfoot hold, lateral stability and a more consistent fit.

NEW BALANCE REBEL V5

ROUNDUP: NEW BALANCE REBEL V5

The New Balance Rebel V5 is, above all, a comfort- and versatility-focused Super Trainer, with a distinctly soft, enveloping ride.

Immediate comfort is its biggest strength. Most testers described a slipper-like feel, with a soft, breathable upper and generally pleasant fit. The foot feels secure, particularly around the heel and arch, with good support at moderate paces. Several runners also found it light and close to the ground, encouraging a natural roll and a fluid feel on easy and tempo runs. Stability is generally sound, including through corners, although some noticed slight instability from the very soft foam and a foot that can move inside the toe box.

Its limitations are clearer when the pace gets serious. Most testers reported a lack of high-intensity responsiveness, particularly at 3:30/km and faster. Energy return is adequate but not enough for speed sessions or short races. Some also felt the foam collapse under load and found the heel cushioning very, perhaps excessively, pronounced, which can create a sense of imbalance or reduced stability for certain runners.

Versatility remains a strength: the shoe works very well for long runs, threshold or marathon-pace running and for anyone seeking a comfortable do-it-all pair. It is less convincing for explosive workouts or runners looking for a true performance shoe.

Testers also raised questions about perceived durability and some fit details, including a toe box that can feel too broad and hold that varies with foot shape.

The Rebel V5 is a highly comfortable and versatile shoe, ideal for daily training and moderate paces, but it lacks the sharpness needed for high speed and outright performance.

ON CLOUDMONSTER 3 HYPER

ROUNDUP: ON CLOUDMONSTER 3 HYPER

Built for lively training, the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper delivers a responsive ride from a relatively firm platform, with enough versatility for quality sessions.

First impressions are mixed. The shoe wins praise for its light weight and immediate liveliness, with marked propulsion as soon as the pace rises. Several testers, however, found comfort inconsistent at slower speeds and the fit imperfect, particularly in terms of overall foot hold.

Heel hold is secure and stability ranges from adequate to good. Depending on the runner, the forefoot or midfoot can feel less precise, with the foot moving during changes of direction or through corners. That relative instability limits the shoe on technical terrain or workouts involving frequent changes of support. In structured sessions, it is more at home on straight lines and even efforts.

The foam feels relatively firm and cushioning is considered light, particularly under the heel. Comfort is adequate rather than exceptional, especially at low intensity, when the shoe can feel stiff or unwelcoming. As the pace increases, the ride improves and the shoe begins to “come alive”. It is therefore less suited to very easy runs or relaxed long outings.

Its clear strength is speed and turnover. The shoe delivers good energy return and forward propulsion, particularly during fast sessions. The rocker, which some testers found subtle or positioned too far forward, encourages a midfoot or forefoot landing but can make the transition feel less natural for certain runners. Despite its stiffness, it remains effective for holding fast paces and working on speed.

The Cloudmonster 3 Hyper stands out for its lively ride and its ability to support quality sessions, particularly tempo and intervals. It will suit runners seeking a responsive shoe for structured training and an active stride. Its limited low-speed comfort and imperfect stability make it less suitable for beginners, relaxed long runs or runners looking for maximum forgiveness.

SKECHERS AERO RAZOR

ROUNDUP: SKECHERS AERO RAZOR

Testing by 20 runners revealed a mixed overall impression of the Skechers Aero Razor, whose positioning only partly matches expectations for a Super Trainer.

Its strengths are clear. The shoe’s light weight is universally recognised as central to the experience. Combined with breathable mesh, it makes the model particularly suitable for warm conditions and short efforts. Several testers also praised its overall balance and a degree of stability, especially at moderate pace or during VO2 max work. Some found the fit comfortable, with a good wrap around the foot and effective lacing. A few runners felt genuine high-intensity speed, with the shoe encouraging cadence and active footwork.

The limitations are equally consistent. The main criticism is insufficient cushioning and a very close-to-the-ground feel. This minimalist character reduces comfort on long runs and confines the shoe to short or specific efforts. Energy return is also considered inadequate for this category, with limited bounce and a subdued rocker.

Stability and foot hold are further areas for improvement. Many testers felt the foot slide inside the shoe, partly because the fit was too wide or the shoe ran large. The issue becomes more pronounced through corners or at high speed, creating a sense of insecurity. Heel and ankle hold were also sometimes considered insufficient.

Overall comfort divides opinion. Some appreciate the model’s simplicity and lightness, while others point to a notably stiff sole and a lack of softness. Part of the group also criticised the perceived material quality, describing it as “cheap” or insufficiently premium.

Its most appropriate use is therefore fairly clear: the Skechers Aero Razor is better suited to specific workouts such as VO2 max sessions, technical drills and short distances up to 10K, or light easy runs, than to the role of a versatile Super Trainer covering varied paces and long outings.

Despite undeniable strengths in lightness and high-intensity speed, the model is held back by insufficient cushioning, foot hold and perceived quality, limiting its appeal in a demanding category.
