From March 23 to 26, 20 carefully selected testers put the Skechers Aero Razor through its paces at the first Road Test Camp, held at Lyon’s Matmut Stadium. On paper, the promise is compelling: a highly affordable shoe that can handle fast workouts while remaining versatile enough for everyday easy runs.

Built for speed… without going to extremes

Long seen as a lifestyle brand for anyone looking for comfort, Skechers is working to reshape its image in performance running. Already well established in the United States, where it equips numerous athletes and has built real credibility, the American brand is now stepping up its expansion across Europe. With the new Aero Razor, Skechers is targeting a key segment: dynamic training shoes that can pick up the pace. The model joins the new AERO range, a line designed to deliver more performance, less weight and, above all, more snap.

With the Aero Razor, Skechers is not trying to go head-to-head with the most aggressive carbon-plated super shoes on the market. The approach is different. The aim here is to offer a more accessible, more forgiving alternative that still delivers plenty of performance. The nylon plate in the forefoot captures that idea perfectly. Less rigid than a carbon plate, it still adds liveliness without dramatically altering your stride. It should appeal to plenty of runners, particularly those who want a fast shoe without the rigidity of a carbon model. At the heart of the Aero Razor is HYPER BURST PRO™, a supercritical ATPU-based foam. This type of material is known for its energy return, while remaining relatively light and durable. It is simply one of the best foams on the market when it comes to energy return. In practical terms, Skechers is aiming for a useful balance between shock absorption and responsiveness. It is not designed to create an ultra-soft feel, but rather to encourage a lively stride with a good rebound on every landing. Combined with the HYPER ARC® rocker, which guides the transition from heel to forefoot, it gives the shoe a smooth, rhythmic feel.

A versatile trainer… and perhaps more

With its technical credentials, the Aero Razor is clearly positioned as a fast training shoe. It looks particularly well suited to quality sessions: tempo runs, intervals, fartlek and faster-paced outings. But it could also work for some runners on race day, especially those looking for an alternative to carbon-plated models. Its very low weight, around 196 g, and lively ride make it a credible option for shorter distances, depending on the runner. Perhaps even the half marathon? With a 36 mm stack, though, it is not the most protective option for long distances.

An unbeatable price… €145

With the Aero Razor, Skechers has produced a coherent, modern and technically accomplished model capable of taking on established names in the fast-training category. At €145, the price is simply hard to beat. In a market where innovation often sends prices soaring, Skechers has managed to deliver a capable shoe at a highly attractive price.

What the Road Test Camp testers thought

Testing by 20 runners revealed a mixed overall view of the Skechers Aero Razor, whose character does not fully match expectations for a “super trainer”.

On the plus side, the shoe was unanimously praised for its light weight, the defining feature of the experience. Combined with the mesh’s good breathability, this makes it particularly well suited to summer conditions and shorter efforts. Several testers also noted its generally balanced ride and a degree of stability, especially at moderate paces or during VO2 max-style intervals. Some users found the fit comfortable, with good foot coverage and generally effective lacing. Finally, certain runners felt genuine liveliness at high intensity, helping them turn over their legs and work on foot speed.

The model’s limitations, however, came up repeatedly. The main criticism was the lack of cushioning, combined with a pronounced close-to-the-ground feel. This minimalist character reduces comfort on longer runs and restricts the shoe to shorter or more specific efforts. Energy return was also considered insufficient for a shoe in this category, with too little bounce and a rocker effect that felt muted.

Stability and lockdown are also major areas for improvement. Many testers reported their foot slipping inside the shoe, partly because the fit felt too wide or the sizing ran large. The issue became more noticeable when changing direction or running at high speed, creating a sense of insecurity. Heel and ankle lockdown were sometimes judged insufficient, reinforcing that impression.

Opinions on overall comfort were divided. Some appreciated the shoe’s simplicity and low weight, while others pointed to a notably stiff platform and a lack of softness. A number of testers also criticized the perceived quality of the materials, describing them as “cheap” or lacking a premium feel.

The shoe’s ideal use case seems fairly clear: the Skechers Aero Razor is better suited to specific sessions such as intervals, technical drills and short distances up to 10 km, or light easy runs, than to serving as a genuinely versatile “super trainer” for a wide range of paces and long runs.
