San Sebastián Marathon: record turnout in the heart of the Basque Country
In the heart of one of Spain’s most beautiful cities, the country’s second-oldest marathon took place on Sunday, November 23. In San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, 11,500 runners chasing strong performances pushed themselves to the limit. This 46th edition was highlighted by a new record number of participants in the history of the event.
San Sebastián, a picturesque seaside town tucked within a mountainous region on the Bay of Biscay, has been attracting fans of the classic marathon distance since 1978. The San Sebastián Marathon course is urban, flat and fast, weaving between the Cantabrian shoreline, the historic center, landmark monuments and Belle Époque architecture. Donostia, as it is known in Basque, impresses both with its scenery and with weather that is often ideal at the end of November. From La Concha beach to the old Casco Viejo quarter and the sweeping coastal views, the route is as enjoyable to run as it is to admire. The Spanish city is renowned for its gastronomy, culture and landscapes, making it a top destination for those who want to stay longer and take it all in.
Since 2024, the organizers have chosen to focus on runners of all levels rather than inviting the world’s very best elite athletes. This approach has led to an increase in international marathoners, with participants coming from nearly 70 countries to discover this unique region.
| Thomas Holliday and Maite Arraiza Aramendia on top
The British runner Thomas Holliday won the 2025 edition in 2:22:35, breaking away at the halfway point. He was followed by Finland’s Aki Nummela, who finished in 2:23:52, and Spain’s Simon Rio Gonzalez, third in 2:24:23.
In the women’s race, local athlete Maite Arraiza Aramendia took the victory in 2:44:59. She finished ahead of Britain’s Louise Flynn, second in 2:48:39, and Spain’s Alejandra Sanchez Massa, third in 2:49:42.
This race remains ideal for runners chasing fast times. With a large field of 7,000 marathoners, a quick and flat course, multiple starting waves to keep things flowing, and eight official pacers ranging from 2:45 to 5:00, everyone has the chance to push themselves and aim for their best. This year, the weather was generally favorable, and participants were carried along by enthusiastic crowds.
A 10K race was also part of the program and attracted 4,500 runners. San Sebastián therefore offers something for every level and every ambition.
| San Sebastián, a city of sport
A testament to its appeal, Donostia hosted the World Marathon Cup in 1993, an event created by World Athletics. Beyond road racing, the city showcases running through a wide range of competitions. The prestigious Cross Internacional de San Sebastián is a long-standing tradition, almost an institution, held since 1956 at the Zubieta racecourse. In 2025, the cross-country race took place on 2 November for its 69th edition.
The race is also part of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour. Its nickname, “Catedral del Cross,” literally the cathedral of cross-country running, speaks for itself about its importance. World Athletics has also awarded the event a “Heritage Plaque,” recognizing it as a major historic competition in off-track athletics. Some of the sport’s greatest names, such as Emil Zatopek, Haile Gebrselassie, and French legend Alain Mimoun, have all taken victory there.
The San Sebastián Marathon drew nearly 11,500 runners for its 46th edition. Between sea and mountains, marathoners pushed themselves on a flat course that is accessible to all. This popular race is part of Donostia’s strong sporting tradition, already well known for its international cross-country event held every year at the beginning of November.
