Harmonie Mutuelle Marathon 10-20K Tours: The Perfect Course Combining Heritage and Performance
Some marathons are run purely for the time. And then there is the Harmonie Mutuelle Marathon 10-20K Tours. Yes, the clock matters. But there is much more to it than that. Ideally placed at the end of September in the running calendar, the race offers 42.195 km where boredom has no place. For this 12th edition, runners will discover a brand-new course worthy of the finest races in France. Between vineyards, the banks of the Loire and historic castles, the event offers an exceptional variety of scenery. And when it comes to atmosphere, runners will not be disappointed. The people of Tours know exactly how to support a race… thousands of spectators will line the streets in the heart of the city. Expect goosebumps during an incredible final straight all the way to the finish line. Here is our analysis of a course unlike any other.
A new course: demanding and intelligently designed
The race starts on Quai Paul-Bert and finishes at Place Anatole-France, right in the heart of the city. In between: Rochecorbon, Vouvray and Vernou-sur-Brenne. Three names closely associated with white wine, but also three places that will put runners’ bodies to the test… in the best possible way.
With 276 m of elevation gain and loss, this is not an ultra-flat course, but it offers everything runners expect from a marathon. The elevation profile may intimidate some athletes, but it is absolutely possible to run fast here. Most of the major climbs come during the first half of the race, making it an ideal course for a negative split and a strong finish through the streets of Tours.
With this new route, the organizers have made the smart choice to include more kilometers in central Tours, meaning larger crowds along the streets. The final straight? It will be packed with spectators. Adrenaline guaranteed.

A flat and fast opening section
The first five kilometers take place along Quai Paul-Bert. The road is wide, flat and fast, offering ideal conditions to begin a marathon. Runners follow the Loire while their engine is still running below full capacity. The key on this section will be to avoid starting too quickly and preserve as much energy as possible for what comes next.
Côte des Pelus: the art of bringing early ambitions back down to earth
Rochecorbon, kilometers 5 to 6. And for a couple of minutes, the party is over.
A 671-meter climb. An average gradient of 6.55%. And a 50-meter section reaching 20%, quickly reminding everyone that running is not an easy sport. But there is some good news. At this stage of the race, the legs are still fresh and the mind is clear enough to slow down and adjust the stride. The less positive news is that this is exactly where the trap lies. Attacking the climb at full speed with another 36 kilometers to go is the best way to fall apart after kilometer 30. If the goal were to hit the wall, there would be no better way to do it…
The key word here is control. There will be plenty of time to recover any seconds lost during the second half of the race. Along the route, numerous spectators will support the runners through this demanding section and remind them that they are warriors.
Once the climb is behind them, it is time to enjoy the outstanding scenery: vineyard plateaus, sunrise and four kilometers to recover before another slightly undulating section, featuring a one-kilometer descent followed by a 300-meter climb. Nothing too serious, but still worth respecting.
Château de Jallanges: a historic monument at the heart of the marathon
Kilometer 13. This is pure class. Honestly, it is difficult to imagine anything more beautiful. The course does not simply pass alongside Château de Jallanges. It takes runners directly through the Grand Allée and into the main courtyard.
This is exactly the kind of section that makes the Tours Marathon so unique. With its magnificent architecture and the largest Saint Martin statue in the world, the château is officially listed as a historic monument. It is not every day that runners get the opportunity to race through the courtyard of a protected historical landmark.
And the best part? A five-kilometer descent follows immediately afterwards. The perfect opportunity to pick up the pace again or simply enjoy the views over the vineyards.
Along the Loire and a refreshment station at France’s largest riverside guinguette
The next section is calmer and faster: the Voie Verte running alongside the Brenne, shaded, peaceful and smooth. This is the perfect moment for a quick internal check and to assess how the body feels. Is the pace still sustainable? This is the time to adjust rather than suffer later.
Kilometer 20 brings more activity with a refreshment station in Vernou-sur-Brenne. The course then heads toward Vouvray, its wine estates and its wide roads, where runners settle into their rhythm, absorb the effort and begin to feel the legs working a little harder.
At kilometer 30, the organizers have positioned a strategically important aid station: La Guinguette de Rochecorbon. It is simply the largest guinguette in France. It would be difficult to imagine a better location for a refreshment point, especially at this stage of the race. Refueling is more than welcome, because the next section promises to be difficult.
Back toward Tours: the painful section… before the moment of grace
To return to the city, runners must cross to the other side of the Loire via the Pont Mirabeau. The climb is not especially long, but after 34 kilometers, with fatigue beginning to settle in, it can hurt badly. This is the point where the mind must take over.
The final seven kilometers are the grand finale. First, there is the setting. The course offers a guided tour through Tours’ heritage: the Grand Théâtre, Place Jean-Jaurès, Avenue de Grammont, Jardin des Prébendes d’Oé and the Charlemagne Tower.
And then there is the crowd. At this stage, the legs may be saying stop, but the encouragement of thousands of spectators along the route will carry runners all the way to the end. The final straight is the icing on the cake. Rue des Tanneurs may feel long, almost endless. But with the finish line appearing in the distance and huge crowds lining the street, the pain begins to fade. This is the moment to give everything and let the emotions take over.
Crossing a marathon finish line is never ordinary. Every runner reaches it with their own story, their own battle and their own victory. It is far more than a simple arch placed above the road. For one day, it becomes a sacred place, leaving unforgettable memories for everyone who crosses it.
In Tours, the emotions are even stronger. The final part of the race takes place in the heart of the city, surrounded by historic buildings and incredible crowd support, creating a finish worthy of the achievement.
