A race that sells out in days

For several years now, the Göteborgsvarvet has been a victim of its own success. But the 2027 edition reached a new level: in just three days, every single bib was gone — making it the fastest sell-out in the race’s history. The previous year, bibs had taken nearly four months to sell out. This year, more than 29,000 runners had already registered within 48 hours of opening, a number that speaks volumes about the enthusiasm surrounding this unique event.

What makes this edition even more historic is the gender split at the start line: for the first time, the field is near perfectly balanced, with 48% female entrants — an absolute record for a race of this scale.

Unlike other major half marathons such as the Cardiff Half Marathon or the New York City Half Marathon, the Göteborgsvarvet does not operate a lottery. Registration is open to all, on a rolling basis, for as long as spots remain. Which means one thing: you need to be ready the moment registration opens.

How to register for the Göteborgsvarvet

Registration takes place directly on the official race website at göteborgsvarvet.se. No lottery, no draw — it’s strictly first come, first served. The problem is that it moves incredibly fast. For the 2027 edition, registration opened on May 23, 2026 — the day after the 2026 race — and everything was sold out three days later.

The organization strongly recommends registering as soon as the window opens to avoid having to rely on the waitlist. For future editions, keep a close eye on official announcements: registration consistently opens in the days immediately following that year’s race, typically around May. Given the global surge in running, it’s not impossible that the organizer will eventually introduce a lottery system for future editions — as Copenhagen and Valencia have done.

How much does a Göteborgsvarvet bib cost?

Pricing varies depending on when you complete your registration. A first wave of bibs is available at 750 SEK (€68), with the price rising to up to 900 SEK (€81). A fair price when you consider the scale of the event and the unforgettable experience it delivers.

An official waitlist for late entrants

For those who missed the registration window, all is not lost. The Göteborgsvarvet offers an official waitlist, open from June 22, 2026 at 10:00 AM for the 2027 edition. Joining the waitlist is free, and it operates through a bib transfer system between runners.

Here’s how it works in practice: when a registered runner decides to give up their spot, an automatic email is sent to the first person in the queue. That person then has 72 hours (3 days) to complete their registration at the current price. If they don’t respond within the deadline, the offer passes to the next person in line — and the position on the waitlist is permanently lost for whoever didn’t act. A fairly equitable second-chance system. Even if the number of people on the waitlist can seem daunting, the chances of securing a bib are real: every year, many registered runners are forced to withdraw due to injury sustained during their preparation.

A few important points to keep in mind:

For runners who wish to sell their bib: this is possible via the personal dashboard on the official website. A 10% administrative commission is deducted, and the remaining 90% is refunded once the bib has been purchased by another runner. Important: once a bib is listed for sale, it is permanently cancelled — there is no way to reverse the decision. Everything is handled online through the official race website.

The start corral system

The Göteborgsvarvet has 55,000 runners on the start line. That’s a lot. To manage this volume, the organization has implemented a sophisticated corral system based on past performance. The fastest runners go first, with the rest of the field spread across successive waves over a three-hour start window (between 1:00 PM and 4:05 PM for the 2026 edition).

To be placed in a corral that reflects your actual ability, you need to submit a qualifying result. Races organized directly by the Göteborgsvarvet are automatically taken into account: the 2025 and 2026 editions of the Göteborgsvarvet itself, as well as the 2027 Varvetmilen (a 10 km race held in spring).

For results from other races, these can be submitted manually during registration, no later than April 15, 2027. The required qualifying standards are:
Men: 38:00 for 10 km · 1:46:00 for half marathon · 3:55:00 for marathon
Women: 41:00 for 10 km · 1:50:00 for half marathon · 4:02:00 for marathon

Runners without a qualifying result are simply placed in the later corrals, based on the estimated finish time provided at registration. The start certificate confirming the final corral assignment is sent by email one to two weeks before the race.

Running for a good cause with a charity bib

Since 2011, the Göteborgsvarvet has run a charity program that has raised over 14 million Swedish kronor (approximately €1.26 million) for various organizations. For the 2026 edition (details for 2027 will be announced in due course), charity bibs were priced at 1,499 SEK (€135), with 500 SEK (€45) donated directly to the organization chosen by the runner.

Organizations supported in the most recent edition include Göteborgs Stadsmission (support for families in need), Suicide Zero (suicide prevention in Sweden), and Ung Cancer (support for young adults affected by cancer). Runners choose their cause at the time of registration. Charity runners wear a distinctive bib on race day that signals their commitment — a detail that can provide real extra motivation when things get tough.

Note: if you’re targeting this option for a future edition, watch for the opening closely — it typically falls around October 15.

Corporate packages

For teams and companies, the Göteborgsvarvet offers corporate packages at three levels (gold, silver, bronze) — a way to combine well-being, team building, and a major sporting event with clients or colleagues. Reservations for 2027 corporate packages will open in August 2026.

It is also possible to rent tents in the corporate village, located immediately adjacent to the start area. More than 150 companies and organizations gather there each year. For those who prefer a shorter distance, the Stafettvarvet offers a relay format with four runners each covering 3.2 km through Slottsskogen park.

The course and the Göteborgsvarvet experience

The start is on Margretebergsgatan, right next to the Göteborgsvarvet arena. The 21.097 km World Athletics-certified course winds through Gothenburg’s most beautiful areas: Slottsskogen park, the Hisingen waterfront, the Avenyn boulevard, two bridges with views over the archipelago and the harbor. The finish is at Slottsskogsvallen, one of the city’s historic stadiums.

A fast but demanding course. With 195 meters of elevation gain and a few stubborn climbs — including a significant one at kilometers 4 and 5 — this is not the flattest course in the world. But fast times are absolutely possible in Gothenburg. The course records are held by Richard Kiprop (Kenya) in 59:35 in 2016, and Fancy Chemutai (Kenya) in 1:07:58 in 2017. Over the past two years, the race has been won by Swede Suldan Hassan in 1:03.

Bib pickup takes place at the Göteborgsvarvet Expo, open from Thursday to Saturday before the race. To avoid long queues, Saturday morning is strongly advised against.
