How to Register for the Seoul Marathon?

Marathon
17/12/2025 21:19

Every March, Seoul shuts down some of its most iconic boulevards to welcome 40,000 runners: 20,000 in the marathon and 20,000 in the 10K. The race follows a legendary point-to-point route from Gwanghwamun (historic city center) to Jamsil Stadium, and it’s the only marathon in Korea with a World Athletics Platinum Label—also recognized under World Athletics’ Heritage Plaque program. In 2025, more than 40,000 runners from 66 countries lined up at the start. Seoul has clearly become Asia’s early-season must-run marathon. But before you can chase that dream, you need to secure a bib—and for international runners, that’s not always straightforward. Here’s everything you need to know to register for the next edition.

| Registration: Where and When to Book Your Bib

For international runners, registration opens on July 1, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. (Seoul local time). The main official route is the organizer’s website (Dong-A Marathon Club). You’ll need to create an account, choose your race (10K, marathon, or Gold Package), and complete payment.

Two other reliable options for international runners
If you want a smoother process (often in full English), two official partner platforms can help: World’s Marathons: guaranteed bibs, often with flexible options (insurance, add-ons, simplified management), and Ahotu: also an official partner, with an easier sign-up flow for foreign participants. These platforms are especially useful if you want an interface fully in English, you prefer a simplified and secure payment process, or you miss out on the official website (some partners keep bib inventory longer).

No lottery: first come, first served
Seoul does not use a lottery system. Registration is first come, first served until reaching: 20,000 marathon bibs, and 20,000 10K bibs. This race sells out fast. The recent pattern is clear: be online exactly at opening time—account created, credit card ready.

A note on local priority
Korean runners often have a priority phase (Dong-A members, finishers of the Seoul/Gongju/Gyeongju series, etc.). Once the domestic quota is filled, local registration closes quickly—while the organizer keeps a separate allocation for international runners.

| How Much Does a Seoul Marathon Bib Cost?

Entry fees are published on the official Dong-A Marathon Club site at registration opening. Typical prices:
Marathon: $100
10K: $80

The Gold Package: the premium experience
A very popular option is the Marathon Gold Package at $350, which includes: an exclusive-design bib, a pair of adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 (Seoul Marathon special edition), premium bag-drop in a dedicated area, access to a photo zone with professional, a finisher medal engraved with your name and timephotographers, official race T-shirt, finisher poncho, and thermal blanket. It’s the VIP treatment—perfect if you want to make the trip truly memorable.

| Marathon vs 10K: Eligibility Requirements

This is one of Seoul’s key specifics: the marathon is restricted to experienced runners.

Marathon requirements
To enter the marathon, you must:
be 18+ on race day
provide official proof of a marathon finished in 4:59:59 or faster
achieved between January 1, 2023 and May 25, 2025
submit the document via “Marathon Record Submission” on the Dong-A site (must include your name and passport number)

Based on your time, you’ll be placed in a start corral (Groups A to G, from sub-3:15 to sub-5:00).

10K requirements
The 10K is much more accessible:
no mandatory qualifying time
start placement based on declared performance (or you start at the back)

So: Seoul is a demanding marathon, but a very open 10K, ideal if you’re traveling with someone running the marathon—or if you want the Seoul experience without the full 42.195 km.

| Practical Registration Steps for International Runners

If you’re coming from abroad, your best strategy looks like this:
Create your Dong-A Marathon Club account a few days before July 1
Prepare your qualifying proof (for marathon applicants)
On July 1 at 10:00 a.m. Seoul time, log in and register immediately
Choose your race (10K, marathon, or Gold Package), enter passport details, select T-shirt size, and pay
Submit your qualifying certificate via “Marathon Record Submission” if not already done

Without this, the organizer may refuse your marathon entry.

Important logistics note
Unlike many European marathons, the race kit is typically shipped to the address you provide—there isn’t a giant international expo pickup setup like Berlin or Paris for foreign runners. Race week is therefore simpler: show up ready to run.

Also note: there’s another Seoul marathon in November (JTBC Seoul Marathon). Don’t confuse the two when registering.

| Dong-A Marathon Membership: Priority Access

Dong-A offers a Dong-A Marathon Membership, designed for serious runners. Benefits include:
priority entry for Seoul Marathon 2026
guaranteed access to Dong-A’s three flagship races (Seoul, Gongju Baekje, Gyeongju)
a special “Runjourney” medal for completing the full three-race challenge

If Korea is on your calendar for the season, this membership can be a smart way to avoid the “click war” on opening day.

| Cancellation, Refunds, and Transfers

Seoul is extremely strict: No bib transfers allowed. Running under a different name can lead to disqualification, loss of insurance coverage, and bans from future editions.

The good news: there is a clear refund window: Full refund available until November 30, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. After that, no refunds. To cancel, you must contact the Seoul Marathon office via Dongma Club and complete identity verification. Refunds are processed back to your card after a few days.

| A Major Operation in a Mega-City

Seoul has nothing to envy from the world’s biggest marathons. Closing a global megacity for 40,000 runners requires precision, and logistics are tightly managed:
two start locations (marathon downtown, 10K in Jamsil) to reduce congestion
road closures from 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
strong police, medical, firefighter, and volunteer presence

On course:
aid stations every 5 km (water + sports drink)
sponges starting at 7.5 km, then every 5 km
snacks around km 15, 25, and 35
mobile medical posts and ambulances at key points

The Jamsil Stadium finish becomes a full post-race village: medal, bag pickup, recovery zones.

| Seoul: Total Change of Scenery, Massive Experience

The Seoul Marathon carries real historical weight as the heir to the Dong-A Marathon, one of Asia’s oldest races. With Platinum Label status and World Athletics Heritage recognition, it’s now Korea’s biggest and most prestigious marathon. The route links major landmarks—from Gwanghwamun through Seoul’s historic and modern districts, then long straight avenues and out-and-backs typical of big Asian city races—finishing inside Jamsil Sports Complex with a championship vibe. Add cool spring temperatures, a strong running culture, and the scale of the city… and Seoul becomes a marathon you don’t choose by accident. It’s a trip, a challenge, and a prestigious race.

If you already have a sub-5-hour marathon on your record and you want a big Asian spring goal, March 15, 2026 deserves a place on your calendar. Now the key is simple: be ready on July 1 at 10:00 a.m. Seoul time.
