Our review and field test of the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, the ideal daily trainer for long runs
Following the release of the On Cloudmonster 3, Swiss brand On unveiled the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper. A shoe that combines generous cushioning with responsiveness, designed to rack up the miles. Marathons.com put it to the test over the past few weeks across a range of sessions, from easy runs to long outings and more up-tempo workouts. Here is our detailed review.
On has carved out a strong position in the highly competitive running market. The brand stands out in particular for its CloudTec geometry, featuring a maximalist sole sculpted with large cavities — a bold visual signature that makes it instantly recognizable. The Swiss company showcases the full extent of its expertise through its Cloudmonster range. These cavities compress both vertically and horizontally on impact to absorb shock, before stiffening during the propulsion phase — a true trademark of On.
The latest model in this line, the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, stands out as an ideal daily trainer for long runs and more sustained sessions. Marathons.com put it to the test — here’s what we thought.
| Comfort above all

Right out of the box, the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is quick to win you over. Its first standout feature is clearly comfort. The fit is snug and pleasant, wrapping the foot naturally. The tongue sits in place सहज, and the overall fit is secured by a structured lacing system with precise, flat laces. The heel has been redesigned and reinforced in high-friction areas, improving both comfort and lockdown. The fit is neither too narrow nor too wide, while the mesh is breathable, thin, and flexible. Finally, reinforcements protect the forefoot around the toes.
This latest version is more substantial than its predecessors, with a stack height of 39.5 mm at the heel and 33.5 mm at the forefoot, for a 6 mm drop. Despite this high stack, the shoe feels surprisingly light in hand, weighing around 250 grams.
This new Hyper version positions itself as a premium, performance-driven evolution within the range. With this super trainer, On has pushed the Cloudmonster identity to its limits.
The dual-density midsole features a top layer made of Helion HF foam — a PEBA-based hyper foam from the same family of materials used in racing models. This Helion HF insert delivers greater softness and responsiveness compared to standard Helion foam. Compared to the On Cloudmonster 3, this Hyper version incorporates around 20% more foam in that layer, along with an upgraded compound for enhanced cushioning, durability, and energy return.
The result is increased lightness, bounce, and dynamism compared to traditional EVA foams. Combining the signature Cloudmonster cushioning with high responsiveness, the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper — tested by athletes from the On Athletics Club — also proves well suited for recovery runs.

This foam delivers a soft, cushioned feel while maintaining a certain firmness on impact, regardless of pace. It is combined with a more traditional and durable Helion foam layer underneath, integrated with CloudTec technology. It’s worth noting that the On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper does not feature a carbon or nylon plate — a detail that will appeal to runners who prefer not to train daily in plated shoes. The ride feels more natural, with less muscular strain compared to carbon-plated models. In our view, this is another key strength of the shoe, which is generally more durable than race-oriented plated footwear.
Another standout feature we observed is its stability. One common drawback of highly cushioned shoes is a lack of support, but here the Hyper strikes a successful balance. Even on sandy tracks or uneven yet runnable paths, the foot remains securely held in place. The relatively wide platform also enhances overall stability. The outsole provides reliable grip across a variety of surfaces, which is a real advantage.
| What is it best suited for ?
The On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is ideal for long runs, whether easy endurance outings or recovery sessions. But that’s not all. This model is surprisingly versatile, much like the New Balance 1080v15. Brands are increasingly developing “do-it-all” shoes. Beyond long runs where the miles flow effortlessly, we pushed the Hyper to its limits at paces ranging from 4:30/km down to around 3:20/km.
Even though that’s not its primary purpose and it isn’t designed for faster efforts, it can still handle them. The shoe proves effective for controlled threshold runs, for combining an easy run with drills and strides, or even for certain workouts. In fact, this version can suit both beginners and elite runners.
It’s also a smart choice for sessions like double threshold training. On days with two workouts — where you accumulate a high volume of kilometers at threshold pace — the Hyper stands out as a reliable partner. On these demanding days, when fatigue builds up, wearing a shoe that is both comfortable and responsive makes a real difference. Tested on a treadmill as well, the model performs just as well — allowing you to complete your training blocks with confidence while minimizing discomfort.
| An accessible daily trainer
The heel-to-toe transition is smooth thanks to a fairly pronounced rocker. The forward roll remains progressive and less aggressive than on some performance-oriented shoes. This geometry is a signature of On, designed to enhance foot turnover and help propel the runner forward during push-off.
The Hyper delivers good responsiveness, but remains less explosive than models like the Saucony Endorphin Azura or the Nike Zoom Fly 6. That’s not necessarily its primary purpose. In our view, a certain level of running ability is needed to fully benefit from it at higher intensities beyond easy runs. It stands out as a solid alternative for runners looking for a shoe that is both comfortable and sufficiently dynamic for more demanding training sessions.

The –
✘ High price for a training shoe (a deliberate choice by On)
✘ Slightly firm cushioning feel during the first runs
✘ Not suited for very fast paces
| A versatile type of shoe that is increasingly sought after by runners
This “daily trainer” model is perfect both for easy runs and for certain tempo sessions. Over days and weeks, it becomes clear that it helps reduce muscular fatigue. The On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper allows you to preserve muscle energy, making it relevant for all types of training, from marathon preparation to shorter distances. For runners who link together many kilometers at different paces, this shoe is a real pleasure to use and helps start training blocks with confidence. High-mileage runners will undoubtedly appreciate this maximalist platform, which is quickly adopted.
It’s worth noting that if you are not used to wearing On shoes, this model may feel slightly unusual during the first runs. The cushioning can initially seem almost too firm, even though this sensation fades with use.
