PUMA Deviate Pure Nitro: A Plate-Free Super Trainer Built for Speed

Since 2022, PUMA has made a strong comeback in the running world, much to the delight of hardcore running fans. The German brand has gradually rebuilt an extremely solid lineup around its Deviate franchise and Nitro technology, now widely recognized for its responsiveness and durability. Over the years, PUMA has checked a lot of boxes: daily trainers, maximalist shoes, high-performance carbon racers… the rotation already felt complete. And yet, one piece was still missing from the puzzle: the Deviate Pure Nitro. A lightweight, fun and dynamic shoe capable of handling high mileage while still keeping enough pop to run fast. The kind of shoe you lace up without overthinking it. With this model, the feline brand officially enters the booming super trainer category.

PUMA arrives at exactly the right moment with the Deviate Pure Nitro. For the last two years, the “super trainer” segment has exploded. These versatile shoes capable of handling easy runs, long runs, tempo sessions and marathon pace workouts are taking more and more space in runners’ rotations. After the massive success of the adidas Evo SL, PUMA enters the game with what looks like a smart proposition: a well-balanced shoe powered by its now mature Nitro technology and backed by the increasingly respected Deviate franchise. On paper, this looks like a true Swiss army knife.

| A Deviate… without a carbon plate

At first glance, it’s hard not to think of a classic Deviate Nitro. The silhouette is very similar. The foam aesthetic clearly borrows elements from the Deviate Nitro Elite 4. You still get a generous stack height, a fairly aggressive geometry — but not too aggressive — and plenty of foam underfoot.

But there’s one major difference here: no carbon plate. No PWRPLATE. And that choice is far from insignificant. Over the last few years, carbon plates have made their way everywhere. Sometimes a little too much. Some shoes became incredibly efficient… but also more demanding on the body. Stiffer. Less natural. Not necessarily ideal for everyday running.

The Deviate Pure seems to go back to something a bit simpler. Or rather: something more natural. More pure. The name was probably not chosen by accident. No plate, no problem?

| Nitro foam designed for energy return

The heart of the project clearly sits in this new midsole. Here we get a full block of next-generation Nitro foam. Over the years, “Nitro” has referred to several different foams at PUMA, but this time we’re talking about a nitrogen-infused PEBA compound. And obviously, when you hear PEBA, you immediately think energy return, responsiveness and racing shoes.

But the idea here feels different. PUMA is not trying to create a plate-less version of the Fast-R. There’s no A-TPU foam either. Instead, the brand seems to have taken that lively, bouncy feeling we love in racing shoes and made it more usable for everyday training. On paper, the specs are interesting: a classic drop, but most importantly a very lightweight build. 38 mm heel stack, 30 mm forefoot stack, 8 mm drop and only 220 grams. For comparison, that’s around 30 grams lighter than the Deviate Nitro 4.

“Deviate has been our leading franchise since PUMA relaunched in road running. Our ambition with Deviate Pure NITRO™ was to make speed more accessible, but still retain the performance benefits that have made Deviate loved by runners across the globe. The result isn’t just a run, it’s an experience of natural speed.“

Romain Girard, VP Innovation at PUMA

| A shoe that can do everything

The Deviate Pure is the kind of shoe built for both easy runs and faster workouts. As a bonus, its generous 38 mm stack and dynamic Nitro foam should also make it an ideal companion for long runs. In short, it covers a very wide range of paces for runners.

Without a carbon plate, the ride should also feel more natural and fluid. That’s often what runners appreciate about this new generation of super trainers: the sensation of running fast without feeling like the shoe is forcing a different stride pattern.

And that’s probably where this model could become really interesting. Because it’s not necessarily trying to be the fastest, the softest or the lightest shoe. The Deviate Pure is a bit of all of those things at once. A reliable everyday trainer built for daily mileage. From easy pace to workout pace, its versatility should appeal to a lot of runners.

| PumaGrip: a reliable outsole that never disappoints

Some things are becoming genuine certainties at PUMA. PumaGrip is definitely one of them. Once again, the shoe features generous rubber coverage underneath, with several reinforced zones at the heel and forefoot. Just like on the MagMax 2 or the Deviate Nitro 4, it’s hard to find much better grip on a road shoe.

Rain, corners, wet roads, winter conditions… PumaGrip never disappoints. It grips confidently everywhere. And for a shoe designed to become an everyday training partner, that’s probably a more important detail than many runners realize.

| An upper more comfortable than a true racing shoe

Another good piece of news: PUMA didn’t try to make the shoe absurdly light at all costs. The shoe stays under 220 grams without going down the ultra-minimal route often seen on pure race-day shoes like the Deviate Nitro Elite 4.

You get a generously padded collar, some foam inserts around the tongue and a technical mesh upper that looks both breathable and relatively soft on the inside. Another small detail we really liked: PUMA hid a few fun easter eggs on the shoe. Under the outsole appears a discreet “Let it Rip.” Under the heel tab: “Same Time Tomorrow.” Okay, technically, it obviously won’t save you five seconds per kilometer. But these are exactly the kind of fun little details people appreciate on a running shoe.

PUMA seems to have understood current market trends perfectly. Runners still want speed. Bounce. Stack height. And that playful feeling underfoot. But not necessarily a carbon plate for every single run. They want a shoe that is lightweight, protective, lively and versatile enough to handle both tempo sessions and easy miles. The Deviate Pure Nitro seems to check all those boxes. Now the real question is this: does it have enough under the hood to challenge a benchmark like the Evo SL? On paper, there’s definitely a real battle brewing. Now we just need to see how it performs on the road.

The PUMA Deviate Pure Nitro will be available starting June 4, 2026 for €150 on puma.com.
