adidas unveils an all-terrain version of its flagship shoe, the new Adizero Evo SL ATR
In 2025, one shoe won over runners across the board. Simple, effective, fast and remarkably versatile, the adidas Adizero Evo SL established itself within months as one of the most popular models on the market. And deservedly so. It ticks every box: comfortable on easy runs, lively during intervals and cushioned enough for long outings. It performs everywhere. Now, as the year draws to a close, adidas is updating its flagship model with a version designed to handle every condition: the ATR, built to adapt to every surface and every kind of weather.
A best-seller upgraded for every condition
The Evo SL quickly became THE shoe of 2025. It stands out with a lightweight build, responsive cushioning from Lightstrike Pro foam, adidas’ premium compound, and a naturally lively ride that adapts to almost any pace. In a way, it is a more accessible and durable take on the Adios Pro 4 and EVO 2.
With the new Evo SL ATR, adidas has taken the best of this widely acclaimed model and adapted it for everyday use, including through winter. This revised version is ready for rain, mud and rougher paths. It directly answers the needs of runners looking for one shoe that can do almost everything and pick up the pace on trails all year round.
What does the ATR version actually bring?
The ATR designation is no accident. It stands for “All Terrain Running”, and this shoe gets much closer to that promise through several key updates:
✔ Water-repellent woven ripstop mesh upper: resistant to water and light rain to help keep feet drier in wet conditions.
✔ Lugged outsole with Continental rubber and 1.5 mm lugs: for improved grip across surfaces, from wet roads to damp paths. It is a technology adidas has thoroughly proven over the years.
✔ Full-length Lightstrike Pro: the same foam as in the standard version, delivering the ideal balance of low weight, cushioning, responsiveness and energy return.
✔ Mudguards and reflective details: for greater durability and visibility after dark.
These are smart, effective updates. The Evo SL DNA remains intact, but the shoe can now handle winter conditions and smoother trails.
When the weather turns and roads become slippery, we don’t want runners to feel that their favourite shoe is no longer an option. By adding subtle but powerful features such as water repellency, improved grip, reflective details and enhanced support, we have created an Evo SL version capable of meeting the demands of mixed terrain and every season.
What runners love about the Evo SL, and what carries over to the ATR
To understand the appeal of this new model, it helps to look back at what made its predecessor so successful:
➜ Natural versatility: it is neither a pure speedwork racer nor a heavily cushioned maximalist shoe. It handles everything from easy runs to faster sessions on paths or wet roads.
➜ Comfort and responsiveness: Lightstrike Pro combines lightweight cushioning with plenty of energy return, without the stiffness of a carbon plate, making the ride feel more lively and natural.
➜ Smooth transitions: even without a rigid upper, the fit wraps the foot securely, the heel is locked down by the Adizero slinglaunch, and the shoe feels increasingly responsive as the pace picks up.
➜ Sensible weight: despite the ATR reinforcements, the shoe remains light and true to the EVO SL spirit.
Runner feedback tells the story: the Evo SL is often described as the shoe you put on without thinking, the one that works for almost any run and almost any pace. A true Swiss Army knife.
Who is it for, and what kind of training does it suit?
The Evo SL ATR is aimed at a broad range of runners:
➜ All levels: from beginners looking for comfort and security to experienced runners wanting a capable, reliable model.
➜ A wide range of training: easy runs, base-building mileage, lighter intervals and everyday runs.
➜ All-weather running: wet roads, easy paths and cold or damp seasons.
It is worth stressing that this is not a technical trail shoe. It is not designed for highly rugged terrain or technical climbs and descents, where a dedicated trail shoe is the better choice. With 1.5 mm lugs, its sweet spot is on roads, smooth paths and well-established trails. It fits squarely into the gravel shoe category.
