HOKA Cielo X1 3.0: the lightest, fastest super shoe the brand has ever made
With the Cielo X1 3.0, HOKA is shifting up a gear. The French-founded American brand is pushing its vision of road-running performance even further. Lighter, more aggressive and more responsive, this third-generation model is the lightest carbon-plated shoe HOKA has ever developed, built for one clear purpose: going fast on race day. Since 2024, the Cielo X1 line has embodied HOKA’s competitive ambitions. After a first-generation model that laid the foundations but lost points for its weight, followed by a V2 focused even more heavily on propulsion, the Cielo X1 3.0 marks a genuine turning point: remarkable lightness, highly responsive foam and a strongly propulsive carbon plate. Marathons.com takes a closer look at the features of this new speed machine, already proven by the brand’s elite athletes.
Lighter than ever: the Cielo X1 3.0 takes on the best
The numbers speak for themselves. While the first two generations weighed 264 g and 230 g respectively, the Cielo X1 3.0 comes in at 213 g for men and 175 g for women. That is a significant weight reduction, putting the shoe among the lightest on the market.
You feel the difference as soon as you pick up the pace:
✔ Fresher-feeling legs
✔ Reduced inertia
✔ Less effort required to hold faster paces over time
The update confirms HOKA’s ambition: to make the Cielo X1 its ultimate performance model, a pure racing weapon.
A blend of HOKA’s best technologies underfoot
At the heart of the Cielo X1 3.0 is a highly propulsive carbon-fiber plate, still featuring lateral wings for added stability. It is paired with a more aggressive MetaRocker geometry, true to the Cielo X1’s DNA. The ride is clearly biased forward, encouraging quick transitions and an efficient toe-off with every stride. Runners particularly appreciated this feature on earlier versions: the shoe’s shape naturally urges you forward.
The cushioning still relies on PEBA foam, but this time it is even more responsive. It is the most dynamic foam HOKA has developed to date. Firmer than on previous versions, it delivers:
✔ A more immediate energy return
✔ A sharper sense of liveliness
✔ A more decisive feel at race pace
There is also an important structural change: the lateral cutout in the foam, present on previous versions, has been removed. The result is a more visually uniform midsole, while a central cutout remains to reduce weight.
HOKA lists a 38 mm stack height with a 7 mm drop. Visually, however, the pair appears to exceed the 40 mm outsole-height limit set by World Athletics. This is explained by HOKA’s Active Foot Frame technology, which raises the foam along the sides to wrap around and hold the foot inside the shoe, creating a more stable, enclosed feel. That can make the midsole look extremely thick, but the regulated height is measured at the center of the shoe. The visible lateral foam therefore does not count toward the stack height measured by World Athletics.

An upper built for racing
The new ultra-breathable Leno-woven textile upper played a major role in the weight-saving effort. Thin and light yet secure, it wraps the foot without constricting it.
The asymmetrical lacing reduces pressure points across the top of the foot and improves the fit, while the compression-moulded polyurethane outsole delivers reliable grip across surfaces at minimal weight, exactly what you want from a racing shoe.
Tested and proven at the highest level
The Cielo X1 3.0 did not take long to make its mark in real racing conditions. It has already turned heads at some of the biggest events on the calendar:
✔ Alex Masai finished third at the prestigious 2025 Chicago Marathon in 2:04:37, setting a personal best in the process.
✔ Alessia Zarbo set the French half-marathon record in Valencia last October, running 1:08:20.
These world-class performances reinforce the Cielo X1 3.0’s status among the best shoes on the market.
The Cielo X1 3.0 delivers the lightest, most propulsive ride in the HOKA range. It is designed to help runners chasing speed perform at their best. At HOKA, we are constantly innovating our running products to give athletes a decisive advantage in speed and efficiency, helping them run faster and reach new personal bests and podiums.
What kind of runner is it for?
The Cielo X1 3.0 is a performance shoe, but it is not for everyone. It is clearly aimed at:
➜ Experienced runners
➜ Runners looking for an aggressive, highly dynamic shoe
➜ Runners with any stride pattern, since the PEBA layers underfoot keep the transition smooth
It is particularly well suited to:
➜ Distances from 5K to marathon
➜ Fast track sessions
➜ Specific 10K, half-marathon and marathon workouts
This is not a forgiving shoe for everyday training. It is aggressive, highly dynamic and demanding, built for race day. If your running mechanics deteriorate significantly late in a race, the HOKA Rocket X 3 is a better choice: more stable, while still delivering plenty of speed.
Cielo X1 vs Rocket X 3: two approaches to racing at HOKA
HOKA’s racing range is now clearly divided into two camps:
➜ Rocket X 3: a more accessible carbon shoe for runners of all levels, suited to fast training and racing.
➜ Cielo X1 3.0: the flagship model, lighter, more aggressive and higher-performing, designed to maximize your potential on race day.
Two complementary lines for two clearly different types of runner.
The real takeaway
With the Cielo X1 3.0, HOKA has delivered on its brief. The brand is embracing a radical, no-compromise approach. Firmer, more dynamic and more stable than previous versions, this third generation is aimed at runners who want to turn every race into a personal best. By 2026, shoe weight has become widely recognized as a key performance lever. The brands have taken notice, and this new Cielo X1 is a perfect example. Fifteen grams lighter, it is a demanding but ferociously effective super shoe that confirms HOKA’s growing presence in the most competitive corner of running. The only drawback is the €275 price tag, which puts it among the most expensive shoes on the market.
The HOKA Cielo X1 3.0 embodies HOKA’s purest vision of performance: absolute lightness, maximum propulsion and proven efficiency. A shoe built to chase fast times, personal bests… and, above all, the joy of running on the road.
