Some shoes stand the test of time without ever losing their status as a go-to favorite. The New Balance 1080 is one of them. Since its debut, it has become a benchmark for comfort in running, the pair you reach for without a second thought when it is time to log everyday miles. For its fifteenth edition, New Balance has taken the bold step of rethinking the model from the ground up: Fresh Foam makes way for an entirely new compound, Infinion Foam. It is a major change for one of the American brand’s most iconic shoes, promising more energy return and greater stability. Fans of the 1080 can rest easy: beneath the updates, the same core DNA remains, the qualities that have made this one of the most popular shoes among runners.

Infinion Foam: a new compound for a new era

At the heart of this overhaul is a simple goal: to make the shoe more responsive, lighter and more durable. Infinion Foam, a new technology developed by New Balance, promises improved energy return and enhanced stability without compromising comfort. The new foam is made by injecting nitrogen into TPU to improve both performance and durability. New Balance has therefore decided to move away from its Fresh Foam EVA technology in the 1080 line. That is a first since the v6 launched in 2016!

On paper, the aim is clear: to deliver a more lively, more fun foam that retains the signature softness of the 1080 while adding more pop to every stride, without the shoe wearing out quickly. It also reflects how the market has evolved: many runners now expect their daily trainer to offer the same qualities as a performance shoe used for training, with solid energy return without sacrificing comfort on everyday runs.

The midsole keeps the same substantial profile, measuring 39.5 mm at the heel and 33.5 mm at the forefoot for a 6 mm drop, but the underfoot feel should be a little different: less pillowy, with a more controlled bounce.

A redesigned upper built for comfort

The other major update is the upper. Completely redesigned, it is more breathable and flexible. The dual-layer mesh wraps the foot more effectively, the seams have been pared back, and the tongue and heel are padded just enough. The whole package feels smoother, more refined and almost more modern in its styling. Early feedback from testers in the market suggests that the fit is slightly narrower than previous versions. The design itself seems to draw on a vintage aesthetic, with bright colors and the lifestyle-inspired lines that are part of New Balance’s signature.

Comfort still wears the crown

New Balance has not abandoned what made the 1080 successful: uncompromising comfort. Runners will find the effective cushioning and smooth ride that built its reputation. This time, though, a touch of performance joins the comfort: the 1080v15 aims to deliver balanced cushioning that can handle mile after mile without flattening out, while picking up the pace when needed. It is the ultimate all-rounder, a reassuring option for most runners in their everyday training, from a beginner running 5K to a seasoned marathoner.

The 1080: a flagship shoe for New Balance

If the brand could keep only one model, it would probably be the 1080. It is New Balance’s cornerstone, best-seller and standard-bearer for “running for everyone.” This new version also arrives at a pivotal moment for the company. The American brand, known for its reliability in running, now wants to establish itself as an innovator in the face of intensely aggressive competition. By introducing Infinion Foam, it is sending a clear message: New Balance wants to reclaim the technical leadership it embodied for so long.

A shoe for every day… and every runner

With the 1080v15, New Balance is redefining the daily trainer: a shoe that is not chasing records, but helping every runner stay on track with their everyday routine through reliability, enjoyment and style. Lighter and more responsive, it keeps its character while gaining a more capable new foam.
