Shortly after launching the Cloudmonster 3, Swiss brand On unveiled the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper. Combining generous cushioning with a lively ride, it is designed to eat up the miles. Marathons.com put it through its paces over the past few weeks in a range of sessions, from easy runs and long runs to faster workouts. Here is our detailed verdict.

On has carved out a strong position in the fiercely competitive running market. The brand stands out in particular for its CloudTec geometry, with a maximalist midsole sculpted around large cavities. It is a distinctive visual signature that makes the brand instantly recognisable. The Swiss company showcases the full extent of its expertise through the Cloudmonster range. These cavities compress vertically and horizontally on impact to absorb shock, then stiffen during the propulsion phase. It is a genuine On trademark.

The latest model in this line-up, the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, presents itself as an ideal daily trainer for long runs and some more demanding sessions. Marathons.com put it to the test, and here is what we made of it.

Comfort comes first

The Cloudmonster 3 Hyper wins you over almost immediately, from the moment it comes out of the box and goes on your feet. The shoe’s clear strength is its comfort. The upper wraps the foot securely and feels pleasant straight away. It adapts well to the foot, while the tongue settles naturally into place. The fit is secured by a structured lacing system with precise, flat laces. The heel has been redesigned and reinforced around the high-friction areas. This new heel construction improves both comfort and lockdown. The fit is neither too narrow nor too wide, and the mesh is breathable, thin and flexible. Finally, reinforcements protect the forefoot around the toes.

This newcomer is more substantial than its predecessors, with a 39.5 mm stack height at the heel, 33.5 mm at the forefoot and a 6 mm drop. Despite that high stack, the shoe feels remarkably light in the hand at around 250 grams.

This new Hyper elite model is a high-performance, premium version within the range. With this super trainer, On has taken the Cloudmonster identity as far as it can go.

The dual-density midsole features a top layer of Helion HF foam, a PEBA-based superfoam from the same family of materials used in racing shoes. The Helion HF insert delivers a softer, livelier feel than Helion foam. Compared with the Cloudmonster 3, the Hyper version packs around 20% more foam into this layer, along with an upgraded compound for greater cushioning, durability and energy return.

The result is more lightness, bounce and liveliness than traditional EVA foams can provide. Combining Cloudmonster cushioning with an exceptionally responsive ride, this shoe tested by On Athletics Club athletes is ideal for recovery runs.

This foam provides a soft, cushioned ride while retaining a certain firmness at impact, whatever the pace. It is paired with a lower layer of more conventional, durable Helion foam featuring CloudTec technology. It is worth noting that this model has no carbon or nylon plate, which will appeal to runners who do not want to train every day in plated shoes. The ride feels more natural, and the shoe is less demanding on the muscles than carbon-plated models. In our view, that is another major strength of this pair, which should generally last longer than carbon-plated racing shoes.

Another strength we noticed was stability. The downside of some highly comfortable shoes is often a lack of stability. Here, the Hyper strikes a successful balance between the two. Even on sandy tracks and smooth but uneven trails, the foot stays securely held. The relatively broad platform also reinforces the model’s overall stability. The outsole grips a wide range of surfaces reliably, which is a real plus.

What is it best for?

The Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is ideal for long runs, including easy aerobic runs and recovery efforts. But that is not all. Like the latest New Balance 1080v15, this model is a pleasant surprise. Brands are increasingly betting on shoes that can do a bit of everything. Beyond long easy runs, where the miles tick by effortlessly, we pushed the Hyper to its limits at paces ranging from 4:30/km to around 3:20/km.

Although this is not its primary role and it is not designed for faster paces, it can handle them when needed. The model works well for controlled threshold efforts, for adding strides and drills to an easy run, and for certain workouts. This version can suit beginners just as well as elite athletes.

The pair is also a smart choice for double-threshold training. On a two-a-day schedule, when you are absorbing a significant volume of threshold-paced running, the Hyper stands out as a strong partner. On such a demanding day, as fatigue builds, wearing a shoe that is both comfortable and lively can make all the difference. We also tested the model on a treadmill, where it proved just as effective. It lets you get through your training blocks with confidence while keeping discomfort to a minimum.

An accessible daily trainer

The heel-to-toe transition is smooth thanks to the pronounced rocker. The roll forward remains progressive and less aggressive than on some shoes built purely for performance. This geometry is one of the brand’s signatures, designed to encourage the foot through its stride and propel the runner forward during toe-off.

The Hyper responds well, but it is less snappy than a Saucony Endorphin Azura or a Nike Zoom Fly 6. That is not necessarily its primary purpose. We feel you need a reasonable level of strength and control to use it at intensities beyond an easy run. It is a strong alternative for runners looking for a shoe that is comfortable yet lively enough for more demanding workouts.

The pros

✔ Lightweight feel
✔ Lively ride
✔ Design
✔ Comfort
✔ Versatility

The cons

✘ High price for a training shoe, a deliberate choice by On
✘ Cushioning feels somewhat firm during the first few runs
✘ Not suited to very fast paces

Runners are increasingly looking for this kind of versatile shoe

This daily trainer is just as well suited to easy runs as it is to certain tempo sessions. Over days and weeks of use, you can feel that it helps limit muscular fatigue. The Cloudmonster 3 Hyper saves your legs, making it relevant for every kind of marathon build as well as shorter-distance training. For runners who rack up miles at different paces, this pair is a joy to use and lets them start training blocks with confidence. High-volume runners will no doubt appreciate this maximalist platform, which quickly becomes easy to live in.

One thing to bear in mind: if you are not used to wearing On shoes, this model may feel unfamiliar during the first few runs. The cushioning can seem almost too firm at first, although that impression fades with use.
