At Salomon, the road has become a playing field in its own right. Long associated with trail running and Alpine paths, the Annecy-based brand has been building a serious presence on the asphalt for several years. Following the recently released, futuristic S/LAB Phantasm 3, Salomon continues to shape its performance range with the Spectur 3, a shoe designed to help everyday runners chase personal bests without giving up comfort or stability. Now in its third generation, the Spectur 3 is lighter, more efficient at delivering propulsion and even more stable. A logical evolution for runners who want to move fast without sacrificing comfort or relying on a carbon plate.

For almost a decade, super shoes have been at the heart of conversations among runners. Carbon plates, supercritical foam, featherweight builds... they have clearly changed the game in running. They make times possible that once seemed out of reach. But there is a catch. These shoes are primarily designed for elite athletes: runners with flawless technique, highly efficient mechanics and legs able to handle the rigidity of a carbon plate over 42 km. Put simply, the more powerful and efficient the stride, the greater the benefits.

For most runners, though, the reality is different. As the finish approaches, form breaks down, stability becomes crucial and what was meant to boost performance can sometimes become an additional source of fatigue. For many runners, these shoes ultimately have the opposite effect on performance. At Salomon, that realisation led to the Spectur range. With the Spectur 3, the French Alpine brand has refined the concept further.

A different view of performance

The Spectur 3 is not another carbon super shoe built purely for racing. It starts from a simple premise: ultra-performance carbon-plated shoes are not right for everyone. Salomon is taking a stance that runs almost counter to the market’s current direction by designing a performance shoe for marathoners running 3:30 and beyond. In other words, for the vast majority of runners. The aim is not to eliminate every performance material, but to retain that sense of propulsion while adding comfort and stability.

A plate... made from glass fibre

The Spectur 3 features a full-length glass-fibre Energy Blade. Unlike highly rigid carbon plates, this material encourages a natural stride and a smooth transition from heel to forefoot. The plate also delivers solid energy return while being more forgiving on the muscles. The first model in the range used a carbon plate, but since version 2, Salomon has switched to a more flexible plate that better reflects the shoe’s DNA.

The shoe is lively without the rigidity of a carbon plate. Your stride remains natural, with no need to alter your mechanics. It is a more gradual approach to performance. Perhaps less spectacular, but often more relevant for everyday runners.

A stable platform that comes into its own late in the marathon

The other major strength of the Spectur 3 is its stability.

The shoe is built around:
➜ An EVA foam base
➜ A widened heel platform
A geometry designed to support the stride smoothly

Late in a race, when fatigue sets in, the legs grow heavy and form starts to fall apart, that extra stability can make a real difference. It inspires confidence. And in a marathon, we know how much that matters.

Comfort + responsiveness = the right balance for every runner

Salomon talks about three pillars: comfort, propulsion and stability. In practice, the Spectur 3 strikes a convincing balance between them. It is lighter and more efficient than the previous version, while retaining the reassuring feel that defines the range. This is not an ultra-explosive shoe. Unlike the first model in the range, it is not an S/LAB-style rocket. It is a shoe that lets you run fast... and keep running fast.

Spectur 3 vs traditional carbon-plated shoes

Where a carbon super shoe relies on maximum stiffness for a spring-like effect and supercritical foam, the Spectur 3 focuses instead on a smooth ride and controlled mechanics. Two different visions of performance. And clearly, the Spectur will speak more directly to the vast majority of amateur runners. It may not match an elite racing shoe for outright performance, but it should be far more effective at helping a 3:30-plus marathoner maintain sound form over the final kilometres.

What type of runner is it for?

The Spectur 3 is aimed at:
➜ Neutral runners or those with mild instability
➜ Marathoners looking for a responsive, comfortable ride
➜ Runners chasing a PB without sacrificing stability
➜ Marathoners targeting 3:30 or slower

It could also be an excellent choice for long marathon-training runs, even for a more experienced runner.

The SALOMON rotation

➜ AERGO GLIDE 4: versatile, responsive daily trainer with optiFOAM² foam
➜ SPECTUR 3: responsive shoe with optiFOAM² foam and an energyBLADE plate for training or racing
S/LAB PHANTASM 3: futuristic, lightweight and ultra-fast carbon-plated racing shoe designed for distances from 5K to the marathon

The key takeaway

With the Spectur 3, Salomon is not trying to win over elite athletes. That is what the S/LAB Phantasm 3 is for. Here, the brand is focused on helping everyday runners finish their races more strongly. And perhaps that is the real innovation: a shoe that can support thousands of runners through their effort, respecting their natural stride and protecting them over the long haul. Performance that is smarter rather than more spectacular. It is an approach that should resonate with the running community.

The Salomon Spectur 3 may not make headlines like the most aggressive carbon super shoes. Yet for 99% of marathoners, it may well be the ideal shoe. Because beyond the finish time, being able to run a marathon with your form intact from the first kilometre to the last... perhaps that is the key to a successful marathon experience.
