Distance x Nike: a track-born collaboration unlike any other
The new Distance x Nike collection has been on the shelves at Distance stores since September 5. This collaboration is no accident, putting performance back at the heart of the project with a Vaporfly 4 for racing and a Vomero Plus for training. The two brands share common roots in a sport that first proved itself on the track. For Nike, the partnership appears to be part of a broader strategic shift towards specialist running retailers. Distance is a natural fit: the American giant has chosen to team up with the iconic Parisian store it describes as one of the most influential in Europe.
A collaboration unlike any other
This is not Distance’s first collaboration. For the past three years, the Parisian store has been building partnerships and activations with some of the biggest names in the industry. But Nike takes things to another level. This time, the world’s most influential sports brand is taking a step towards Distance, not the other way around. It is a major achievement and recognition for the work the store has done since it was founded in 2018. That work can be seen in its highly selective product range and exclusive models, but also in its cultural impact, built through the many events hosted by the store and its distinctive identity at the intersection of fashion and running.
For Nike, the partnership is part of a broader movement. It clearly signals a step towards specialist running retailers, reflecting the new strategy Nike has set in motion for running after several years in which the brand had somewhat neglected the category.
Two worlds meet on the performance front
Distance’s “for all runners” tagline makes its ambition clear: the store wants to speak to every runner, from beginners to elite athletes. In practice, though, the Parisian retailer has always offered a highly selective product range with a clear bias towards performance: technical apparel, exclusive models and forward-thinking brands. You can buy your first pair of running shoes at Distance, but the store’s identity is also built around its performance credentials and demanding approach to curation. It steers clear of overly conventional colourways, always looking for more distinctive versions and products you will not find in a typical running shop. While other retailers focus on the most commercial versions, the ones guaranteed to sell, Distance sets itself apart and concentrates on shaping new trends. That is the store’s DNA: bringing a touch of modernity, style and authenticity to running.
The same thinking can be seen in the two pieces chosen to anchor the Nike collaboration: a Vaporfly 4 designed for racing and a Vomero Plus built for the everyday training of committed runners. This is not just a visual partnership. Nike and Distance also meet on performance, offering two models made for running fast and running long.
A capsule built to stand the test of time
This collaboration starts with a pair of shoes. It is the very first pair Guillaume Pontier wore in the 2000s, back when the Distance crew was just beginning to run its first laps of the track. The Parisian store’s co-founder grew up in athletics as a middle-distance specialist, with a father who coached for the French Athletics Federation, a grandfather who served as president of Stade Clermontois and a brother who was selected several times for France’s youth teams.
The track also takes centre stage in the campaign, filmed at Stade Robert Bobin in Bondoufle. It is a meaningful setting, chosen for its cultural roots and its ability to embody sport in its purest form: the athletics track. This blue track in the Paris suburbs becomes the visual thread running through the entire collection, closing the loop between Guillaume Pontier’s personal story and the broader story Distance and Nike want to tell today, one of performance and passing knowledge from one generation to the next.
Distance and Nike assembled a high-calibre cast to tell that story. First come the stars of the sport: the legendary Sir Mo Farah, a four-time Olympic champion, and Ladji Doucouré, a world champion and true ambassador for French athletics. Alongside them is a rising generation featuring Gemima Joseph, Léna Kandissounon, Romain Legendre and Intisar Abdul-Kader. They all embody the future of French athletics.
The Nike Vaporfly 4 and Nike Vomero Plus get a new look
Two essential shoes make up the Distance x Nike collection. The Vaporfly 4, built for racing, comes in a vivid orange and metallic silver colourway. With its ZoomX foam, carbon Flyplate and low weight, it is aimed squarely at runners chasing a personal best on the road, whatever the distance. The Vomero Plus is designed for everyday training, delivering greater comfort and cushioning through its ZoomX foam.
The apparel side of the collection draws on the visual codes of an old-school athletics meet: a cotton T-shirt in three colourways, featuring a vintage yellow Nike x Distance logo on the front and the Distance logo on the back, joined by a cap, scarf, water bottles and a foam finger for supporters.
Distance x Nike brings together two brands with plenty in common and the same exacting standards when it comes to performance and innovation. Nike contributes two models that have already proved themselves on runners’ feet, while Distance adds its own story through an authentic, track-inspired design. We were waiting for this collaboration, and it does not disappoint. It also shows that Distance’s influence is growing internationally. The Parisian store is now a brand in its own right, shaping running culture today and, more importantly, tomorrow.
