Marathons.com attended Nike’s global launch event for the Pegasus 42 and ACG Pegasus Trail. And let’s be clear: whenever Nike unveils a new Pegasus, it’s a big deal. Pegasus is one of the Swoosh’s most iconic franchises. Since 1982, it has weathered generations, trends and technological revolutions. Expectations were high for the Pegasus 42. For this latest edition, Nike has taken a smart approach: preserve the model’s DNA while adding a serious dose of innovation. A full-length curved Air Zoom unit in the midsole brings more dynamism under the forefoot, giving the Pegasus extra propulsion without compromising its identity as an accessible, versatile running shoe. And as if that weren’t enough, Nike is also expanding the franchise with an ACG Trail version, featuring reinforced materials and a new outsole designed for gravel and trails.

Nike Pegasus 42: where heritage meets innovation

Nike’s message during the conference was clear: keep the Pegasus DNA, but modernize the shoe with a better underfoot feel. The Pegasus 42 remains a versatile, accessible daily trainer. But this new version also brings some major changes.

New ReactX foam
It’s the same foam, only better, with 15% more energy return than the previous version. This is durable, resilient cushioning designed to handle the daily mileage.

The big new feature: a full-length Air Zoom unit
This is the major change. Previously, there were two Air Zoom units, one under the heel and one under the forefoot. Now there is a single curved Air Zoom unit running the full length of the shoe. It acts almost like a plate, but with more flexibility and forgiveness. The aim is to deliver more propulsion while keeping the ride smooth and enjoyable. This is probably the most fun and dynamic Pegasus in a long time.

More forefoot propulsion
Nike has added 3 mm of cushioning under the forefoot without increasing the overall stack height elsewhere. That’s an impressive technical achievement. The shoe still measures 37 mm at the heel and 27 mm at the forefoot, for a 10 mm drop.

For this new version, the toe spring is also more pronounced. With its more aggressive forefoot rocker, the shoe naturally guides the stride forward. And here’s a small detail many runners will appreciate: there’s more room for the toes in the front of the shoe.

We took everything runners have always loved about the Pegasus franchise and turned it into the best version ever with the Pegasus 42. This shoe strikes a balance between elements that stay true to its heritage, both in its look and its feel, and new innovations that make it even more iconic in a way that is uniquely Nike.

The Pegasus 42 can still do almost everything

Put simply, the Pegasus is the quintessential running shoe. Nike describes it as an accessible model that can handle everything from easy runs to faster workouts. Its fairly traditional construction is paired with enough technology to add some snap, making it a fit for almost any runner. It will suit the following runners particularly well:
➜ Beginners taking up running
➜ Runners looking for a versatile, accessible shoe
➜ Elite athletes who use it for easy runs in their rotation
➜ Runners who want to feel the ground slightly and avoid bulky maximalist shoes

In a world dominated by high-stack shoes, the Pegasus 42 remains a more traditional running shoe, with moderate but sufficiently protective cushioning. For experienced runners who rotate several shoes across their training, it’s ideal for everyday easy aerobic runs. For this group, faster and longer sessions can feel too demanding in the Pegasus; from a pure performance standpoint, stepping up to the Vomero range may be a better option.

ACG Pegasus Trail: an invitation to explore the trails

The other major reveal at the conference was a trail version of the Pegasus 42. This is not simply a spin-off, but a distinct model: the ACG Pegasus Trail. Nike has seen gravel running take off, with more and more runners keen to try trails without moving straight to an ultra-technical trail shoe such as the ACG Ultrafly or ACG Zegama. The ACG Pegasus Trail is designed precisely for that gap.

To develop the shoe, the brand drew on feedback from its elite ACG athletes, including Lauren Gregory, as well as hundreds of amateur trail runners who tested it ahead of launch and helped Nike refine the comfort and durability of the ACG Pegasus Trail, two essential qualities for this type of shoe.

Building on the iconic Pegasus heritage, we set out to create our most versatile trail shoe yet, one that can move seamlessly between trails, gravel and roads. It is our most capable and versatile model to date, thanks to feedback from our global testing network and the All Conditions Racing Department.

ReactX foam underfoot
Underfoot, you get the same energetic cushioning as in the road Pegasus 42. ReactX foam provides a lively, durable ride, but the Air Zoom unit is absent, as it is more effective on the road. The trail model also sits closer to the ground to provide greater stability on uneven surfaces.

More room in the toe box
Designed specifically for trail runners, the forefoot provides more room for the toes. That is one of the biggest advantages of this new model, especially since friction and hot spots can become an issue on long runs and descents.

Breathable, highly durable mesh
For Nike, durability was a key priority during development. That’s why the Swoosh reinforced the mesh with technical, robust materials built to handle all conditions. Fine, lightweight materials maintain breathability in both rain and bright sunshine. Rubber has also been added around the forefoot to protect against debris on the trails.

An All Terrain Compound 2.0 outsole
A crucial part of any trail shoe, the outsole, known as Nike All Terrain Compound 2.0, has been completely redesigned:
✔ 30% more traction
✔ 25% greater abrasion resistance
✔ Multidirectional hexagonal lugs

The aim is to provide a smooth transition from road to gravel while giving runners the confidence to tackle trails.

Built around the Pegasus DNA, this is a shoe made for exploring. It is not necessarily intended for an UTMB race or highly technical mountain terrain, but it is perfect for:
➜ Gravel
➜ Forest paths
➜ Light trail
➜ Mixed-surface runs

The takeaway

With the Pegasus 42, Nike has delivered a major update to its iconic model while preserving the qualities behind its success. It has not reinvented the shoe’s identity, but it is now more dynamic and even more versatile thanks to the full-length Air Zoom unit. The Pegasus 42 remains a shoe we could recommend to almost any runner.

The ACG Pegasus Trail opens another door: toward running that is less compartmentalized, more hybrid and more adventurous. For road runners curious about taking their first steps in the mountains, or anyone running on mixed surfaces, it is an ideal choice.

Together, the two models reinforce Nike’s ambition to make Pegasus the quintessential running shoe: the one you learn to run in and the one you reach for day after day. Pegasus is still built around versatility and accessibility, now with even more enjoyment and energy in every stride.

The Pegasus 42 is still the Pegasus. Only better. A safe bet. A mainstay of the running world. More than anything, this new version shows that Nike has no intention of letting its iconic model rest on its heritage. And the ACG Trail version? An invitation to discover the mountains. In a market saturated with ultra-technical super shoes, the Pegasus range continues to fill an essential role: the shoe you pull on without thinking, the one that carries you through everyday miles, on pavement and now on the trails too.

✔ The Pegasus 42 and ACG Pegasus Trail will be available on April 9 at the official website www.nike.com and from specialist retailers.
