The Boston Marathon is quite simply the oldest marathon in the world. From its first edition in 1897 (with 18 runners at the start) to the 129th edition in 2025, the event has been a great success. From its inception, the race became one of the prestigious World Marathon Majors, placing it among the most revered marathons around the globe. However, registering for the Boston Marathon is a challenging endeavor. This is perhaps why it represents the ultimate achievement for many marathon runners.

Our team breaks down the entire registration process so you might one day stand at the start line of the oldest marathon in the world.

| The Boston Marathon, the ultimate dream

The Boston Marathon is more than a race; it’s a legend, a holy grail for thousands of runners worldwide. With its storied past, its emotion-laden streets, and its passionate audience, it stands as a symbol of excellence, perseverance, and ultimate recognition of effort. Running in Boston is about joining an elite group, realizing a dream built on months, if not years, of training. It’s a symbol of personal achievement, transcending mere kilometers. For many, Boston isn’t just a finish line; it’s a crowning glory.

To aim for the start line of the Boston Marathon in 2026, you need to have achieved the required time between September 2024 and September 2025. Registration will open in September 2025, typically mid-September, for a very short window (just a few days). You will then need to submit your qualifying time on the official marathon website and wait patiently: sorting is done based on performances. You usually receive a response in the weeks that follow.

For the charity program or travel agencies, anticipation is your best ally. In fall 2025, the Boston Marathon partner charities will open their calls for applications. That’s when you can submit your application. As for tour operators, some authorized agencies offer their packages early, sometimes as early as April or May for the following year. Spots fill up fast, especially for the most advantageous packages. Spots go quickly, so we recommend you check regularly.

Running in Boston is a dream that can become a nightmare when you look at the registration process, it’s true. However, several options are available if you are truly motivated to live your “American Dream.”
