The Budapest Marathon will celebrate its 41st edition in 2026. In 2025, 7,500 runners crossed the marathon finish line, while a total of 40,000 participants took part in one of the weekend’s events. To stand under the starting arch along Pázmány Péter Promenade, you’ll need to register online via the official race website. Unlike many major marathons — particularly the World Marathon Majors such as London, New York, Berlin, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, or Sydney — Budapest does not operate a lottery system. It’s first come, first served. Registration usually opens several months before race day and closes in early October, unless entries sell out earlier. In other words, anyone can easily sign up for the Budapest Marathon.

Some runners can benefit from reduced entry fees for the Budapest Marathon. For instance, students who present a valid ID can access discounted bibs. Similarly, runners who have previously participated in “Run in Budapest” events, as well as sports clubs and running teams, are eligible for special rates. Clubs must provide proof of membership when collecting their race packs. In addition, the organizers allow companies and groups to register collectively, streamlining the process for teams that wish to sign up together. Finally, elite athletes are invited to contact the event organizers directly to confirm their elite status and finalize their registration.

If running means more to you than just crossing the finish line, the Budapest Marathon’s charity entry program is a great fit. It gives runners the chance to support local or international charities while guaranteeing their place on the start line. The concept is simple: commit to raising a minimum amount of donations for one of the event’s partner organizations, and your marathon entry is secured. These charity packages often include more than just a bib—they may come with accommodation, a race t-shirt, logistical support, or even local activities. It’s a meaningful way to experience Budapest while contributing to a good cause. And for those who missed the standard registration window, it’s an excellent alternative that combines sport, travel, and solidarity.

The Budapest Marathon is also a great opportunity to share the excitement of race day with friends. Two relay options are available: teams of two or teams of four. The total marathon distance of 42.195 km is split between the runners. In the duo relay, the first runner covers 19.8 km while the second completes 22.4 km. In the four-person relay, each runner averages around 10 km. This unique format in Hungary’s capital offers a fun and social racing experience.
