Between muscle fatigue, lack of energy, and overwhelming emotions, the end of a marathon can prove to be complex and challenging. 42.195 km, often referred to as the “queen’s distance”, is as legendary as it is demanding. While some manage to maintain their pace until the very end, others resort to jogging or walking to cross the finish line. But how does the marathon, despite the pain and exhaustion, push a person beyond their physical and mental limits?

How does a marathon push the boundaries of physical and mental endurance?

There’s a saying that a marathon is “30 kilometers with the legs, 10 with the mind, 2 with the heart, and 195 meters with tears.” And perhaps there’s some truth to that. Despite the grueling distance, many finishers manage to complete the race. On average, the dropout rate for this distance is between 10 and 15%. Let’s explore the different theories on how so many manage to achieve this feat after hours on the road.

Overwhelmed by emotions

The end of the race can be an emotional rollercoaster, often difficult to handle. Mile markers along the route remind runners just how close they are to the finish line and the completion of their challenge.

Staying focused until the end

For some, focus is paramount. Distractions, whether from the event’s ambiance or minor muscle aches, are not an option.

Keeping the goal in sight

Pushing beyond the pain

For some, the end of a marathon is synonymous with suffering. Muscle pains, blisters, injuries, fatigue—many factors can make the closing stages difficult. This is when mental strength takes over from physical power, with each step bringing them closer to the finish line. It’s crucial to cling to those last few meters; take heart, the hardest part is over!

Carried by the atmosphere

No matter the size or scale of the marathon, the last few meters near the finish always bring together supporters. Strangers, families, passersby… many are those who raise their voices and provide strength to the runners in their final push. Cheers, bands, music groups, loved ones along the route… These various attractions help athletes move a little closer to the gates of accomplishment. Some might even feel as if they have wings, forgetting the pain and letting themselves be carried towards the finish, lifted by the crowd.

Regardless of motivations or skill levels, the last kilometer of a marathon is tough for everyone. The most impressive aspect is the strength and dedication needed to achieve this goal.
