New York City Marathon 2026: Andreas Almgren stuns on his debut, Sheila Chepkirui reclaims the crown
In the streets of the Big Apple, the 55th New York City Marathon delivered a superb show. The surprise came from Sweden's Andreas Almgren, who made a huge statement on his first outing over the distance, winning in 2:06:01. The day after Halloween, the half marathon world champion was the stuff of nightmares for his rivals. A big-time performance that confirms his huge marathon potential. In the women's race, Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui drew on her experience to take back the New York title in 2:24:36, two years after her 2024 win, after a breathless finish against Hellen Obiri.
Running 2:06:01 in his very first marathon (2026), Andreas Almgren has hit hard. The 31-year-old Swede posts one of the fastest debuts in history, though still some way off exceptional ones like Kelvin Kiptum (2:01:53 in 2022), Yomif Kejelcha (1:59:41 in 2026) or Guye Adola (2:03:46 in 2017). His time is also slightly slower than those run by Kenenisa Bekele (2:05:04 in 2014) and Eliud Kipchoge (2:05:30 in 2013) in their first marathons. A remarkable performance, all the more so on New York's demanding course, and one that hints at a lot more to come over the distance. More to follow.
